Bad Hair Movie Makes Good Impression at Sundance

Robin Thede, Amazing Host of Black Women Star in Horror Film

By James Nelson
Independent Reporter

PARK CITY, UTAH – Bad Hair is a movie set in 1989 about a killer weave that infiltrates the lives of women in the Los Angeles music industry and features a cast including Vanessa Williams, Laverne Cox, Lena Waithe and Michelle Hurd.

The importance of getting a film into the Sundance Film Festival and affording opportunity for filmmakers and actors was evident at one of the main street gatherings for the cast members of the movie.

Bad Hair is an insane, horror film starring all black women. It takes place in 1989,” said actress Robin Thede who is also in the film.“

“This is my first Sundance, but I have a lot of friends who have come through here,” Thede said adding “It really is a gateway, even filmmakers like Justin Simien, who did Bad Hair, came here with Dear White People six years ago and you just look how he’s skyrocketed. I love to see what it does for people of color especially because I feel it is a very prestigious place to show your work. I think that’s only helpful for all of these projects. I’m so excited to track this years’ filmmakers.” Thede stated.

Bad Hair is an American horror comedy written, directed, and produced by Justin Simien. It stars Elle Lorraine, Kelly RowlandVanessa WilliamsJay PharoahLena WaitheBlair Underwood and Laverne Cox.

It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2020.
