MIFF 2018, VII: Pitching for documentary films

MIFF VII: Pitching for documentary films

Nilotpal Majumdar, founder of DocedgeKolkata and maker/editor/cinematographer of more than 18 documentaries, fiction and short films, including Dhatujhar/Metal Storm’96 and The Vehicle with the Soul of a Man, will conduct a workshop at Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) on Pitching. Besides making films, he also has more than 20 years of film teaching experience. This year, he has been given the 2017 EDN Award, from the European Documentary Network (EDN).

The award recognises Majumdar’s contribution to documentary culture. Through his continuous engagement for DocedgeKolkata, Asian Forum for Documentary, he successfully established and developed an important hub for documentary professionals from all over the world. Nilotpal is a post-graduate from Film & Television Institute of India, Pune, with specialisation in Editing. Over the years, has been working as director, editor and cinematographer. Till recently, he was Professor and Dean of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata, a premier Film Institute in India for post-graduate studies.

Earlier this year, Majumdar told Forbes magazine, “There is a critical gap of financing in India. Indian film schools do not train students in documentaries. Most film-makers do not know where their film is headed. You have no idea about the camera-and-character relationship.”

MIFF for documentary, short and animation films begins in Mumbai on 28 January.
