Dallas Buyer’s Club wins Sebastiane Award 2013GEHITU, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transexual´s association of the Basque Country has decided to grant the SEBASTIANE 2013 award to the movie Dallas Buyer’s Club, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, and screened in the Pearls section of the 61 San Sebastian Film Festival. According to the Jury, consisting of the members of Gehitu Igor Blanco, Joseba Errekalde, Juanjo Arin, Nicolás Subirán, Javi Irigoien, Joaquín Garrido, chaired by Pavel Cortés (director of the Maguey Prize of the International Film Festival of Guadalajara [Mexico]), “Dallas Buyer’s Club underlines the historical debt that society still holds with the first affected by HIV. This is probably the first film that highlights the fact that any kind of gay and transgender people, got closer, desperate and segregated by the vast majority of society, in the search for their own survival, going ahead of doctors and pharmaceutical industry’s interests. The main character of the film, Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual homophobic and sexist, changes his negative view of homosexuality, when he experiences in first person social rejection and ignorance”. The Jury also gave an Honorary Mention to the film Pelo Malo, directed by Mariana Rondón and screened in the Official Competition of the Festival. This movie shows the violent rejection and incomprehension of a mother for her child, for fear that her child is not heterosexual. The Jury wishes to thank the Festival Selection Committee for the choice of LGTB themed films in the 61th edition. Sebastiane Latino This year Gehitu has created another prize Sebastiane Latino. This time they aim to collaborate so values like respect or sexual freedom may advance in Latinoamerica against machismo and intolerance. ‘Quebranto’ a mexican film directed by Roberto Fiesco was the winner. 03.10.2013 | SanSebastian's blog Cat. : AWARDS
