Never Let Me Go is an Oscar Contender

Never Let Me Go is an Oscar Contender

By Ron Gilbert

The Oscar race for best actress
has begun; Carey Mulligan will be a contender. There are many great elements to
the film but, Carey Mulligan's (Kathy) phenomenal performance is the main focus
of the film), l After seeing her performance in this film you realize that this
actress has “IT”
Keira
Knightley (Ruth) is also a big surprise showing me her depth as an actress  in this film and also in director
Massy Tadjedin’s film” Last Night” which is the closing night film at the
Toronto Film Festival and is the opening night film at the  Rome Film Festival. So I also see her in the
Oscar race. She has the face that can launch a thousands ships and as many
votes.
Adding to this acting triumvirate is Andrew Garfield
(
Tommy) who has all
the quirks of an awkward teenager and his transitions as he gets older show his
talent. So academy members take note.

Director Mark Romanek’s moved me
into a very emotional state and has now established himself as a director to be
applauded after having a very successful music video career He made a big
splash as a director in his video for Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails
rendition of”Hurt” back in the day and followed that with his video for
Madonna’s “Rain”. You should try to view them if you haven’t already. We have a
director who graduated with a degree in Cinema and Photography from Roy H.Park
School of Communication. I feel that the former is very important info because
when you see his latest film the look of the film is very impressive. He is a
director of detail. I would have loved to hear the discussions on the
cinematography coverage with cinematographer Adam Kimmel who also is very
impressive along with composer Rachel Portman’s mesmering score

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s
compelling novel , Alex  Garland  has pretty much unfolded this story  which starts out in a boarding school called
Hailsham in England in  the late
1970's.The 3  very good  youngsters portraying them  have an amazing resemblance to the older
actors. As a matter of fact I wanted to see more of them as they established
the love triangle which is at core of the film.
Isobel Meikle-Small (Kathy as a child) deserves special
mention here and we will be seeing more of her in the future. As we see them enter
adult life we feel the love that they still have each other and how they must
prepare themselves for the future and the path that they will follow based on
the journey which began many years before.

We have 3 British actors instead
of an American actor doing their take as Brits but since I was married to 2
Brits and  lived in London at certain
periods of my life ,I  knew that  the words were  spoken in true fashion

In my personal opinion, I think
that women will enjoy this film more but some of us sensitive guys will also be
touched when we recall portions of our youth and the awkwardness we may have
had. So I suggest that you view this film with an open mind and let it touch
you as it did me
