The Men Who Fell to Earth

Just like Ziggy Stardust in an alien theory based pop concept-starring Bowie
30 years ago (in The Men Who Fell to Earth) the Slovenian film director Jan
Cvitkovič in his latest film Arheo (Archeo) talks about party of
3(man, woman and a child) who has
fallen from the sky to the Earth. And he is using a powerful close ups, the images to instrument his very
own private film concept. However, this is no The Men Who Fell to Earth
pop concept by Nicholas Roeg and Slovenian film director Cvitkovič is different author, with
different backgrounds. He is intuitive archaeologist in a quest for something completely different. His authentic and constant
experimenting on film provokes different reactions and different standings
between filmmakers in region. Moreover, his film Arheo (Archeo) reflects
his own state of mind: a secret private world of somewhat I quote "archetypal state
of the art". Those three are
actually human and they land in Slovenian nature from a sky,
making their way out in life. His cinematic style again combines close ups and
this time shots of nature, although he used close ups in his previous work too.
Before we go any further, judging by his first films V Leru
(Idle Running) awarded film Kruh in Mleko
(Bread and Milk), Odgrobadogroba (Gravehopping) established in an independent film
Slovenian production company STARAGARA, Cvitkovič did not fortell archaeology and film at first. However,
his new film Arheo (Archeo) seems to be in (in)direct connection to
archaeology. And the purpose of archaeology is to learn more about past
societies and the development of the human race, archaeology artifacts are
written sources and the only way to learn about ancient is to dig a little hole
and use the knowledge. In this film, he deals with earth and soil as a base, and
he deals with the planet and primal instincts in men. The planet Earth for him
is as a hiding emotional relict: where he uses images of subconscious
primeval memory. But Earth is a higher force and primal motive.
Arheo (Archeo) is a visual piece and this is his prime instrument
and form: a great photography that seems almost like some sort of hallucinatory
narrative. Even though it seems that everything is simple, bare and beautiful,
the film embraces the movies’ artistic playfulness on a very basic level. It is
about nature as a universe and relationships between woman, man and a boy in
nature, but without words and with no psychological context or obvious connection. For
him this is a prayer in seek for love and an emotional fulfillment that is in contemporary today very hard to achieve. All three
protagonists live according the instinctive essential impulses and fight to survive, to eat, to drink and to live.
Arheo (Archeo)
tackles into ecology and the question of identity, which is very good and it
seeks from the viewer to detach himself from the collective experience.
