Freedom Comes First-Anarhism On Film

Belgrade’s Auteur Film Festival, according to its international jury Zvonimir Jurić - Croatian film director, Thomas Lemarquis- contemporary artist and actor from Iceland and Vladimir Perišić-young Serbian film director awards Australian born film director Michael Rowe. Rowe, winner of Cannes’ Camera d'Or in Belgrade honors Best Film Award for his Mexican film. Indeed, it seems that incredible Aussie Rowe for the year 2010 has picked up prestigious awards for his featured graphic nude sex scenes film, which is by the way, as well as amazed provoked Australian audience and several feminist organisations to react in public.

The competition program of the festival this year presents 14 films from all over the world. Special Mention Award this year goes to Iranian/German co production The Hunter directed and starring by Raffi Pitts. Award for Best Film Director goes to South/Korean film Poetry and Best Author under 35 Award to Matthew Poterfield for American film Putty Hill.  Aleksandar Petković Award for the Best Director of Photography goes to Iranian-German coproduction The Hunter. FIPRESCI Awards goes to a Russian film Silent Souls directed by Aleksei Fedorschecko and to Rowe’s Leap Year. Serbia has two FIPRESCI Sectors.

And as for film festival, somewhere in between  although and nevertheless, and in spite of deep financial crises Author Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia managed to survived for 16 years now. The festival is primarily reserved for non-Hollywood art film lovers in order for Serbian audience to see and review Cannes, Rotterdam or Berlin film award winners.  This year festival holds on to a new motto Freedom Comes Expensive, with appropriate program to follow Anarchism and Film ideally in this case, featuring Jan Luc Godard’s Film Socialism and Week End, Serbian black wave film presenter Žilnik’s brand new film Old School of Capitalism, Ken Loach’s Land and Freedom, Wim Wender’s film from 90s Till the End of the World and one more Serbian film about freedom Miners’ Opera White White World directed by Oleg Novkovic. Traditionally the festival audience is able to see this year Palm D’Or winner, Loong Boonmee Raleuk Chat, and new films by Zhang Yimou, Greg Araki, Lee Chang Dong, Cristi Puiu as well. In accompanying program, the audience could see New Turkish Film, Art House Film Debuts and Planet Earth - The Last Challenge.

In spite of the crisis, there is an innovation: this year festival introduces a special visual program investigating the fluid limits and interferences between filmmaking and contemporary visual arts. The festival audience had the opportunity to review Alive Video Surveillance of Belgrade streets and corners known by the political assassination of journalists in the last decades.
