Athos at Kino Otok

Next to the excellent film program,  one of the exciting event at Kino Otok was the performance in the selection of the Slovenian prominent film author Jan Cvitkovič, called Athos. It is live performance directed and performed by Italian artists Cosimo Miorelli, Massimo Croce and Moreno MiorelliIt is a journey in the remote atmospheres of Greek mountain Athos followed by words, images directly drawn, during the process and live sounds produced by authors. These three different artistic expression, at the same time interact, interweaving memory and imagination. Athos is a live set combining projected digital painting, spoken word on Italian and the experimental performance of a Greek church spiritual music into the unique storytelling device. Cosimo Miorelli said that, " Athos. Appunti dalla Montagna Santa is about Moreno, my father, who had the chance to visit Mount Athos in the January of 1985, driven by his passionate research on the tradition and symbolism of Byzantine icons."

Mount Athos or Aghion Oros, the Holy Mountain, is in fact a semi-autonomous republic located in the furthest Chalkidiki peninsula, on the Aegean sea in Greece. The area takes its name from its southern mountain, Athos, a 2033 meters steep cliff rising straight from the sea. The performance is part of a larger project, that led to the creation of an illustrated book, “Athos. Appunti dalla Montagna Santa”, published by Editori del Grifo in Italy.
