Kantara, review: Dispossessing the 'possessed'

Kantara%2C%20poster.jpg
Kantara, review: Dispossessing the 'possessed' Kantara is about conflict. Conflict between nature and human beings. Conflict between landlords and their subjects. Between Forest Officers and villagers using forest resources for subsistence. Between two powerful and major landlords. Between humans and ‘possessed-by-deities’ humans. Between humans and wild beasts. Between a mother and her son. Between a hero and his nemesis. Between a film and its audience. Yes, a film and i...

Aye Zindagi, Review: Goodness of human beings, greatness of cinema

Aye%20Zindagi%2C%20poster.jpg
Aye Zindagi, Review: Goodness of human beings, greatness of cinema A very touchy, sensitive and polarising subject, Aye Zindagi (O Life) hits the right chords and sticks diligently to its theme and thrust. Based on an “incredible” true story, the film comes across as honest and well-crafted. One can feel emotions similar to those evoked by Anand, made 50 years ago, and Safar, before it, but, though both starred the new star on the horizon, Rajesh Khanna, both were works of fiction...

Janpath Kiss, play review: Kiss and miss

WhatsApp%20Image%202022-10-11%20at%2010.27.04%20AM.jpeg
Janpath Kiss, play review: Kiss and miss Staged in testing circumstances, Janpath Kiss, a full-length play in Hindustani, provided its share of laughs and satirical commentary on the contemporary socio-legal scene in India, particularly New Delhi. With a huge cast and three musicians seated on stage, it appeared to be under-rehearsed and a bit longer than necessary, considering there was no intermission or act division. Showing patches of imaginative theatrical ideas, it started on the wrong ...

Ticket%20to%20Paradise%2C%20Poster.jpg
Ticket to Paradise, Review: Destination rom-com that loses track of both the rom and the com When you have actors of the calibre of Julia Roberts and George Clooney on board, you can pretty much get them to do anything. And when you ask them to deliver motor-mouth dialogue, full of love-hate content, it becomes a long spat that is occasionally funny but, at times, unfortunately, predictable. Pretty Woman Julia and Batman (1997) George have a ball, as do the co-actors, for most of the action i...

FICCI%20FRAMES%202022%2C%2001.jpg
FICCI FRAMES Fast Track 2022, 01: A comeback of sorts It was overdue. Usually held in March, it was first postponed at the eleventh hour, and then cancelled. The year was 2020. And everybody remembers what was happening in March 2020. The Ides of March plagued the world in 2021 too, and only relented after March 2022. Vikram Vedha, Review: Gang gang, bang bang There are only a handful of characters in Vikram Vedha who do not wield guns, swords or any ‘weapon’ they can lay their hands on. Almost all of them die. And what about those who do wield guns and makeshift weapons? They meet their fate too, except for…Rarely has a film let loose a such a fusillade of bullets, from all sorts of hand-guns as well as AK47s, as in this film. And rarely have we seen so many corpses tumble left, right a...

Varun Dhawan holds sway at Amazon Prime Video bae Events starting on time is a rarity in the entertainment circuit of Mumbae….oops, Mumbai, but for once the exception proved the rule. A smartly dressed young lady greeted me at the desk, took my name, which I spelt out to her loud and clear. Then she took my picture on an ipad and told me to collect my identity badge a few minutes later. As I entered the Grand Sangam Ballroom at the J.W. Dhokha Round D Corner, Review: True lies, deception-perception and betrayal-portrayal

Dhokha%2C%20Poster.jpg
Dhokha Round D Corner, Review: True lies, deception-perception and betrayal-portrayal Way back in 1940, a British film was made under the title Gaslight. It had an American version in 1944. Since then, it has inspired a lot of psychological thrillers, in India too. In the film, a man plots to convince his wife and all around them that she is mad, in order to recover the jewels that he had tried to steal from her late aunt, who he had just murdered, but had failed by the sudden arrival of the ...

Chup: Revenge of the Artist, Review: Critickill analysis Film critics, run for cover! Better still, seek police protection. Take a cue from the one renowned film critic already has police protection, and comes to our press previews with an armed escort, in uniform. The reason for this shield is not known to me. But all the other reviewers are mere mortals, some senior, some junior and some newbies. Some of them are well paid, some are paid much less than what they deserve, some are well-to-do...

Absolution” is about addiction–suffering with it, trying to get rid of it, passing it on from one generation to the next. How do we deal with our problems? Who’s to blame? Are they ever really solved?  The idea for the film came from a series of searching conversations I had with fellow producers  Andrew Shemin and Seth David Michell about these themes. (We’re all something of armchair philosophers.) I wrote the script with Seth in mind. The rest of our creat...

The MBIFF is a World Class Event.
Submissions end December 31,  2022, submit through filmfreeway.com, or through the festivals website, myrtlebeachfilmfestival.comThe Myrtle Beach International Film Festival has been awarded several prestigious awards including one of the "Top 25 film festivals worth the entry fee" by Movie Maker Magazine and has become a favorite of many filmmakers and film enthusiast!

The MBIFF 18 will take place April 18 - 22 2023.
What sets the MBIFF apart from other festivals is our commitment to the true spirit of film. Once you are here, you are family.
Our judging panel includes judges from all walks of life, why? As with any subjective judging, it is important to have a broad spectrum of perspectives. Many film festivals house only filmmakers as judges, which can lead to niche judging which we feel is unfair to filmmakers, especially if you do not fall inside their niche. Your film receives the fair and honest treatment it deserves. By including other perspectives from different walks of life it creates a balanced judging platform, which we believe is why we have been touted as having one of the best film line ups in the World. We believe that your project receives a more overall perspective grading as to whether it entertains or informs a wider viewing audience rather than that of only an entire panel of film makers. Not to worry, we do have several film professional on board as judges!
The goal of the founder and director Jerry Dalton, was to create a venue for independent film makers which is not corrupted by politics.
The MBIFF screens projects in a multi-million dollar theater, housing state of the art technology.
We look forward to viewing your film /project!

ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN by Barbara Bentree
Documentary December 2021 - USA  90 minutes
OITG_ONESHEET_POSTER2_FINAL%20450.jpg

Kevin Box has always known exactly what he intends to do with his life. In his words, "I want to have a conversation with people now and hundreds of years into the future."

As an artist, Kevin has been fascinated by the evolution of "lost wax casting" to create bronze sculptures and he spent many of his early years being mentored by other successful sculptors. Through his own R&D, he developed a unique signature by “unfolding” origami and casting these beautiful patterns into museum quality wall hangings.
"ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN" traces the career arc of Kevin and his partner/wife Jennifer as they now continue to create multiple traveling exhibitions of their artwork. Over the past decade, their unique sculptures have been viewed all over the country by millions of people.
"ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN" is an Artfilm, a Love Story, and an inspiration for all by showing what is possible…just starting with a simple piece of paper!

HOT MONEY by Susan Kucera (director of Jeff Bridges Living in the future’s past)

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, General Wesley Clark and his son Wes Clark Jr. take us on a journey through the complicated realities of our financial system and its profound exposure to climate change. Hot Money outs the whole game, the whole charade, the whole crapshoot of the money system with all the humor and intelligence of a New Yorker cartoon. Combined with the wisdom of international business experts and academics, Hot Money is rich with historical context. It severs the knot of economic and political forces that may lead to societal collapse.

12TH HOUR narrated by David Morse

Documentary by Susan Kucera (director of Jeff Bridges Living in the future’s past)

USA July 2021 51 minutes 48 seconds

Much of our population currently lives with hopeful delusions about climate change. These delusions, many of which are built in by evolution, hamper our ability to meaningfully address the problem.

Our brains evolved to solve short-term challenges for our survival. Climate change is a long-term challenge to our survival. Can we bridge the gap between these modes of thinking?

Emmy-nominated actor David Morse narrates the brutally honest 12th hour with insight from noted evolutionary biologists, climate scientists, cognitive researchers and psychologists.

Visionary thinkers like Peter Russell, Dr. Paul Piff, Dr. Kari Norgaard and dozens of the brightest minds in academia lay out an unflinching look at mankind: our past, our abilities, our shortcomings and what may be humankind's final destination.

If we have any hope to survive the changes we’ve locked in to our climate, we need to be honest with ourselves and our limitations. The 12th Hour lays out our biases so that we may overcome them.

ENOUGH Lebanon's Darkest Hour

Documentary by Daisy Gedeon second feature documentary
Australia  june 2021 90 minutes (in post)

ENOUGH! Lebanon’s Darkest Hour follows Australian-Lebanese filmmaker Daizy Gedeon’s personal and independent introspection into how her ancestral homeland, the place her family was forced to flee in the 1970s because of the Civil War, has ended up in a state of complete catastrophe. It is a story of awakening in which Daizy is forced to abandon her idealism about Lebanon and face the cold, harsh truth about the country’s dark underbelly which is its most sinister enemy.

Daizy prosecutes the case against the corrupt political class which has reduced a proud people to beg for garbage collection instead of greatness and negotiate potholes rather than peace.

ENOUGH! is the plea and the prayer, the feeling and fierce determination of the 4.5 million Lebanese in Lebanon as well as the 16 million members of the Lebanese diaspora scattered around the world, whose hearts continue to bleed for a homeland they are desperate to return to and so deeply want to believe in...once again.

The Sound of Us directed by Chris Gero

the-sound-of-us-poster-corporate-approved-FINAL_cannes_450.jpg

"The Sound of Us" illustrates that during this critical time in world and U.S. history, music gives sound to hope and courage, allows us to grieve and be honest, and is the great, universal language that unites us all.

As the world grapples with unrest the profound truth remains that, through music, we are not alone.

The Sound of Us weaves inspiring stories about the beauty and goodness of music with interviews and performances by artists such as Ben Folds, Sarah McLachlan, Avery*Sunshine, Eric Whitacre, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Hiromi, Antonio Sanchez, Butch Walker, Will Wells, Patti Smith, and many more. Combined, these powerful vignettes illustrate how music heals us, gives us hope for the future through our children, keeps our heritage and history alive, allows us to have the most difficult of conversations, sheds light on current struggles, and continues to invite us back to the thing that unites us all - music.

The film is directed by Chris Gero, a Grammy nominated, American music industry executive, concert producer, record producer, songwriter, film director and composer, founder of Yamaha Entertainment Group of America and Chief Artist Relations Executive for Yamaha Artist Relations Group
