TORONTO PREVIEWS

"Access is the first step" Cameron Bailey

programmer_cameron.jpg
The first Toronto Film Festival I attended was in 1986, and I came as a student journalist. Even back then, the Festival of Festivals, as it was known, had a reputation for an open, global outlook. But the diversity of its films wasn’t always reflected in the diversity of its press corps. As the years passed and I moved from film critic to festival director, it’s become ever more clear that we can all do more to i...

Love Sonia, Review:  Sister’s sibling search sifting sordid sex surroundings Official statistics show that there hundreds of thousands of sex workers in India, and many of them are below 18. Being a sex worker is not a crime, but soliciting and living of the earnings of sex workers are clear crimes. That does not deter the ‘businessmen’ who run brothels and sex rackets. 270 girls/women go missing every day in India and most land up in the flesh trade. Only 1% of them ma...

Laila%20Majnu%2C%20Poster.jpg
Laila Majnu, Review: Crazy lovers in serene Kashmir Transposed from ancient Arabia to modern Kashmir, the tale of doomed lovers Laila and Majnu is retold by brothers Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali. Setting it in scenic, serene, Kashmir was probably the only thing that they got right, for in almost all the other departments they have failed to score. Told at a pace that varies from the frenetic to the crawling, the film fails to strike a chord with the audience, a cardinal mistake that seals its fat...

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018

"A film that Google does not want you to see  - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"

PW: data

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”. Containing ground-breaking interviews with Jordan B. Peterson, Peter Schweizer, and others, The Creepy Line offers an explosive look at the meddling and intervening done by Google and Facebook on their supposedly “neutral platforms”.

The Creepy Line takes the conversation about data privacy and control further than ever before by examining what Google and Facebook do once they control a user’s data. Not only is this data sold to the highest bidder, but it is used it to mold, massage, and manipulate the public consciousness while influencing opinion on a vast scale - all with the goal of transforming society to fit their worldview.

Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.

There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.

TAIPEI by Jason Lester Romance under influence - USA, first feature film 96 minutes

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Filmfestivals.com Bruno Chatelin

Taipei%20Still%207.jpeg

Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.

Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.
