Toni Servillo : a possible winner?

By Maria Rosaria D'amico

Toni servillo is in Venice with 3 amazing Italian movies.

Toni Servillo is for Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino what Marcello Mastroianni was for Federico Fellini. They have worked together since the beginning of their career. Sorrentino came to Venice 20 years ago with Toni Servillo presenting “Un uomo in più” and now they are back with “E’ stata la mano di Dio”, an autobiographical and very moving picture about Sorrentino’s family, the importance of Maradona and the tragedy that changed his life completely when he was 16, and also  probably what made him become the film maker he is today. Sorrentino claims that he likes to work with actors that don’t need to be directed, and Servillo is always in his movies guess why… At the press conference Toni Servillo said jokingly: “I thought Paolo Sorrentino has always considered me like an older brother, but now I think I got promoted (and this because he plays Sorrentino’s father in the movie).

Both Sorrentino and Servillo come from Naples, so do Leonardo Di Costanzo, director of “Ariaferma", the second movie here in Venice starring Toni Servillo, and Mario Martone, currently one of the best theater directors in Italy…. who is in Venice with the movie Io rido ancora, a masterpiece about the Neapolitan theatre tradition, and again Toni Servillo plays the main character giving the most amazing performance you can think of.
