What's Happening: Wednesday Highlights At FLIFF

Tuesday, November 7---Wednesday is shaping up to be another very full day at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, with an intriguing mix of American indie films and world cinema highlights.

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS

NOBELITY
There is no higher accolade than the Nobel Prize. In the fascinating documentary NOBELITY, American director Turk Pipkin interviews a who's who of Nobel Prize winners, providing a stunning look at the world's most complex social, political and economic problems through the eyes of Nobel laureates. Filmed in the US, Europe, India and Africa, the film combines the insights of nine distinguished Nobel winners who offer a first-person analysis of the world's difficulties and ways of addressing them. Harry Knowles of website Ain't It Cool News calls this inspiring film "one of the most important of this or any year".

Screening: Wednesday, November 8, 6:00pm, Cinema Paradiso
For Tickets: Log on to the Festival's website: www.fliff.com or come to the box office.

COMEBACK SEASON
Ray Liotta takes on a rare comedic role in the wonderful American indie COMEBACK SEASON, directed by former Kids In The Hall comedian Bruce McCullough. This road-to-redemption saga follows two unlikely buddies...a cheating husband (>Ray Liotta) and an injured high school football star (Shaun Sipos) who become court ordered roommates. Emotional carnage leads to unlikely alliances, as the two men scramble for a second chance at love and stardom. This audience crowd-pleaser also stars Glenne Headly, Brooke Nevin and Rachel Blanchard.

Screenings:
Wednesday, November 8, 9:00pm, Cinema Paradiso
Tuesday, November 14, 7:00pm, Cinema Paradiso
For Tickets: Log on to the Festival website www.fliff.com or come to the box office.

HEARTLIFT (Lifting De Corazon)
We know that films from Spain and Argentina can be sexy and alluring, but when they have a heart to match their sensuality, the result is a treat for the brain and the heart. Such is the case with the film HEARTLIFT, directed with great skill by the veteran director Eliseo Subiela. In this wonderfully acted drama, a world famous plastic surgeon, who hails from Seville where he lives with his wife and children, becomes involved with a young woman while on a professional visit to Buenos Aires. An adulterous affair ensues but the husband is far from relieved...he must cope with his feelings of guilt and disappointment, and wonders if his passion is just a cover for a mid-life crisis. The leads in this bittersweet comedy/drama are Spanish hearthrob Pep Munne and beautiful newcomer Moro Anghilleri. The film's producer Luis Angel Bellaba will be present at the screening, with an After Party after the first screening on Wednesday evening at Tarpon Bend.

Screenings:
Wednesday, November 8, 9:00pm, Las Olas Riverfront
Thursday, November 9, 5:00pm, Las Olas Riverfront
Friday, November 10, 3:00pm, Las Olas Riverfront
For Tickets: Log on to the Festival's website: www.fliff.com or come to the box office.

UNCONSCIOUS
One of the more intriguing films in the Festival mixes Barcelona, Sigmund Freud and Sherlock Holmes in a story set in the Gaudi gaudy city in 1913. Directed by acclaimed Spanish auteur Joaquin Oristrell, the film has a honey of a plot. Alma, played by one of Pedro Almodovar's favorite actresses Leonor Watling, is perhaps one of the most modern women of her day. Her husband, Dr. Leon Pardo, is a psychiatrist who has become an ardent student of Sigmund Freud. When the good Doctor leaves his wife on the eve of her giving birth, Alma and her sleuthing brother-in-law (who is also in love with her) trace the Doctor's medical journals for clues to his disappearance. This is a film of great intrigue, with wonderful art direction and costuming that illuminate the beginnings of the modern era. The film was a major box office success in its native Spain and was nominated for 7 Goya Awards (the Spanish Oscar).

Screening: Wednesday, November 9, 5:00pm, AMC Coral Ridge
For Tickets: Visit the Festival website: www.fliff.com or come to the box office.

Be sure to catch the final screenings of such celebrated Festival films as THINGS THAT HANG FROM TREES, ANIMALES HERIDOS, JONI'S PROMISE, and A VERY SERIOUS PERSON.
