winners of the 2008 CINE Special Jury Awards

CINE is proud to announce the winners of the 2008 CINE Special Jury Awards. Chosen by a panel of members of CINE’s Board of Directors, the CINE Special Jury Awards recognize the elite among the winners of the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award. This year’s recipients include productions from independent and student filmmakers, as well as such distinguished organizations as MSNBC, Sesame Workshop, WGBH, National Geographic Television, Thirteen/WNET New York and The Washington Post.

The 24 recipients of the CINE Special Jury Award were selected from among the nearly 1,000 productions that were entered in the 2007 CINE Golden Eagle Competitions. Held twice yearly, the CINE Golden Eagle Film & Video Competitions recognize excellence in film, video and new media by awarding the CINE Golden Eagle Award to productions that are judged to be of the highest quality through two rigorous rounds of judging. These CINE Golden Eagle winners then compete for the CINE Special Jury Awards, which are given to the best entries in each of CINE’s content categories, as judged by the CINE Board of Directors.

The CINE Special Jury Award winners are now eligible for CINE’s top prize: the CINE Masters Series Award. The Masters Series Award is presented to the best production in each of CINE’s professional divisions: Professional Telecast Non-Fiction, Professional News, Professional Non-Telecast Non-Fiction, and Independent. In addition, a CINE Award of Excellence will be given to the top film in the Student Division. The winners of the CINE Masters Series Awards will be announced at CINE’s Golden Anniversary Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. on April 24, 2008.

Based in Washington, D.C., CINE celebrated its 50th year of honoring excellence in film and video in 2007. Founded as a way of promoting American documentary films to overseas audiences, CINE’s mission has broadened to include serving emerging and established film, video and new media professionals through its twice-yearly competitions. CINE honors a wide range of talent worldwide through the coveted CINE Golden Eagle Awards, and provides ongoing opportunities for education, exposure, networking and resources. Notable CINE Golden Eagle Award-winning filmmakers include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Robert Altman, George Lucas, Mike Nichols, Robert Zemeckis, Frederick Wiseman, Albert Maysles and Ken Burns.

Donald Thoms serves as CINE’s President, Wendy Revel as Executive Director and Betsy Walters as Director of Competitions.
