Relive the highlights of the 70th Sydney Film Festival which took over Sydney screens from June 7 - 18, 2023.

12 days, nearly 250 films, hundreds of filmmakers guests and a red carpet feeling that stretched all over Sydney. The 70th Sydney Film Festival was the ultimate celebration of cinema in 2023. Relive the highlights from the opening night film The New Boy, to our closing night award ceremony and screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

A LETTER FROM FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
NASHEN MOODLEY

For our 70th edition, we invited you to SEE IT ALL and I want to thank you deeply for generously accepting that invitation and celebrating cinema with us. You came in huge numbers, with over 100 sessions sold out, helped us premiere nearly 250 films, and welcomed filmmakers from around the globe with open minds and enthusiastic applause. Relive some of our favourite moments and watch our highlights video.

I had my own highlights: Warwick Thornton being moved to tears at the incredible response to his film THE NEW BOY; Jane Campion speaking with David Stratton about her remarkable career at The Hub; the sheer joy radiating from all in attendance at RED, WHITE & BRASS; and applauding Asmae El Moudir as she collected the Sydney Film Prize for her astonishing film THE MOTHER OF ALL LIES.

We’d love to hear your highlights too. Tell us all about them in our audience survey, which plays a really important part in helping us plan for next year (yes, we’re already planning for SFF71! See you June 5 – 16, 2024!).

I also want to extend a huge thank you to our big family of volunteers, our donors who make it possible, our Subscribers and Flexipass holders whose loyalty and film fandom is the heart of the Festival, all the participating filmmakers for all their daring works, and our partners who we couldn’t make the Festival without.

For now, we’re on the road with SFF hits to regional cinemas with the Travelling Film Festival. Tell your friends to catch Festival favourites like PAST LIVES, FALLEN LEAVES and HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE – or head there yourself to catch what you missed!

See you at the cinema,

Nashen Moodley
Festival Director
