Vibes of the Caribbean! Queens of Reggae Music & Carnival CultureCBFF Film Club features two highly uplifting documentaries from Jamaica and Trinidad this month. QUEENS OF SOUND & JAB! BLUE DEVILS OF PARAMIN. To lead the discussions after the screenings we will be joined Canadian Reggae Artists Tanya Mullings & Ammoye, CHRY radio host of Rebel Vibes, Carrie Mullings and Elizabeth Topp film producer for JAB! BLUE DEVILS OF PARAMIN. QUEENS OF SOUND A Herstory of Reggae and Dancehall explores the long neglected female side of Reggae and Dancehall music in Jamaica. Three generations of women in the Jamaican music business tell us about their role in past and present, their first steps into the career, their struggle for acceptance in a male-dominated business, their life paths and big success. World-famous musicians such as Marcia Griffiths, Tanya Stephens, Sasha, Cecile, Chevelle Franklyn, Queen Ifrica, Macka Diamond and Lady G - just to name a few, as well as women behind the scenes like managers, music video directors, producers, and journalists give us an understanding of Jamaica's music scene from a female point of view. The documentary highlights the social, economic, religious and individual aspects of Reggae and Dancehall culture through in-depth interviews and performances. Directed by Sandra Krampelhuber , 74 min JAB! Blue Devils of Paramin Isolated in the mountains of Trinidad, the district of Paramin, once a year at Carnival time sheds its rural languor and erupts into an inferno of blue-painted ‘jabs' or devils. This 46-minute documentary, filmed in the two weeks leading up to Carnival, follows Kootoo, King Devil, as he prepares with his three brothers to once again win the village competition for the most convincing devil band. Known for his athletic prowess, and given to extraordinary feats like ripping up trees and scaling tall buildings, the charismatic Kootoo must still work hard with his band of devils to win the prize in the face of serious competition from a new generation of ‘jabs'. Will the brothers' scheme to add a new twist to the masquerade be enough for them to win? Directed by Alex de Verteuil, 46 min
