Tribute to the Wilson brothers at Oldenburg

Oldenburg International Film Festival
September 7th to 11th 2005

Luke, Andrew and Owen Wilson present their latest production “The Wendell Baker Story” in Oldenburg as an International Premiere

Luke, Andrew and Owen Wilson made names for themselves as actors, writers and producers over the last years. Filmfest Oldenburg showcases a selection of their creative output with this year’s tribute. The first directorial work of Luke and Andrew “The Wendell Baker Story”, starring Luke and Owen, is seeing its International Premiere in Oldenburg. Luke, Andrew and Owen Wilson are planning to attend the festival as guests of honour.

They are celebrated as Hollywood’s most promising talents. The Wilsons belong to a generation of comedians which has opened the genre and led it to unusual directions. They added cynicism and bizarre tragedy to the classical romantic comedy. With their unique mix of melancholy and eccentricity the Wilsons are seen as ambassadors of a new culture of humour.

Their time at the university became the starting point for the careers of the Texans. A friendship with directing-prodigy Wes Anderson led to a first team-production with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), which featured Luke and Owen in leading roles and Andrew Wilson as producer. Owen Wilson also co-wrote the script. For their next project “Rushmore” (1998) the Wilsons were able to get many established stars on board, among them Bill Murray and Seymour Cassel.

Apart from mainstream-fare like “Legally Blonde”, “Old School”, “Starsky & Hutch” and “Shanghai Noon”, films that made Luke and Owen household-names of American comedy, the creative pinnacle of their careers came with “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). This film made critics pin their hopes on the Wilsons to bring about changes in Hollywood. Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson received an Oscar-nomination for the script of “The Royal Tenenbaums”.

Andrew Wilson has acted in several big productions but only in smaller roles. He is producing feature- and documentary films. For “The Wendell Baker Story” he shares the direction with brother Luke. The cast of “The Wendell Baker Story” includes Luke and Owen Wilson, Kris Kristofferson and Seymour Cassel, who will also be in attendance at the festival.
