3rd Annual Tiburon International Film Festival
March 12-18, 2004
At its 3rd edition, the Tiburon International Film Festival will screen 240 films from over 50 countries, including four tributes:
One to Charlie Chaplin with two documentaries containing many film clips, one called "Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin" by Richard Schikel, the film critic of Time magazine; and the other one called "Charlie Chaplin - The Forgotten Years" made by a German director Felice Zenoni, after he left US for Switzerland for his political views.
Second, to George Stevens, the great American director, and to bring the Western genre back by showing "Shane," and "George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey" made by his son George Stevens Jr.
Third, a tribute to Luchino Visconti, the great Italian director of such films as Death in Venice, The Damned and The Leopard....
And the fourth to Robert Snyder, an Oscar winning documentary director of such films as Michaelangelo, Pablo Casals...
The festival Director told us about the festival rich line up this year.
The Tiburon International Film Festival seeks to provide the community with top quality films from around the world that would not be accessible without such an event. Our goal is one of cultural enrichment and heightened cultural awareness.
We will show this year a collection of films made by Marin County filmmakers titled "Marin Filmmakers," a first program of its kind. The films are: Alive, Landfill, Seniors for Peace, Visage, Win Each Way.
A Spotlight on Polish Cinema, with three of their latest films: Belissema, My Town, My Roast Chicken.
We will show several films related to the present situation in the Middle East between Palestinians and Israelis, with such films as: The Road to Jennine, Shooting Conflicts, Gaza Strip....as well as the situation in Afghanistan with films like: Siyamo, Return to Kandahar...and several films from and about Iran: Mystic Iran, Taezieh, Beyond Words, And Along Came A Spider, A Tree that Remembers, The Crossing (Behrouz Vosoughi)...
For the music lovers, we will show: Eroica! (US), Whose is this Song (Bulgaria), Bola De Nieve (Spain/Cuba), Charkh-O-Falak (Tajikistan), Havana Feelings (Cuba/Germany), Mods (France), Life On Jupiter (US) ...
For the sports fans, we will show NIHI, about Nihi Kinimaka the world famous Hawaiian surfer, Yeah Right! directed by Spike Jones on skateboarding, High Speed, with a lot of motorcycle racing all over Europe...three action packed films made by BMW company directed by John Woo (Hostage), Tony Scott (Beat the Devil), Joe Carnahan (Ticker)...
For the young adults, we show a number of films from all over the world including: Sonny Listening, Carter's Wish, Madison Rye, Saving Worms (US)... Turtle Island (Spain), Deep Silence (Mexico/Cuba)...
For those who love animation and find this art form delightful, we will show: Brothers, Night, Autumn, Dear Sweet Emma (US)..., Exten.21 (UK), Desert Holiday Nightmare (Sweden), Love Parade (Georgia)...
We will have a Filmmakers' Panel about the challenges and issues of independent filmmaking today, with Saul Zaentz (Producer of The English Patient, Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...), Lloyd Silverman (Producer of Snow Falling on Cedars...), Brad Bird (From Pixar Pictures: Finding Nemo, Toy Story… )....and others.
As for a look back to a chapter of our recent history, we will show a film about the Black Panthers, the 1960s Bay Area radical group, called Day of the Gun, which took place in Marin County by an award winning and a very respected local filmmaker.
We will show a series of Jewish films made by the very talented filmmakers from all over the world. Films like: As if Nothing Happened, Shooting Conflicts, Routine, The Barbecue People (Israel).....On Hitler's Highway (US/France/Germany), When I Was Fourteen: A Survivor Remembers, Stealing Innocence (US).....
For those who follow the current events, we will show: Hidden in Plain Sight (US) an investigation of the U.S. relationship to Latin America as seen through the prism of the School of the Americas; Raymundo (Argentina) about the life and work of Raymundo Gleyzer, Argentine filmmaker, kidnapped and murdered by that country’s military dictatorship; The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt (US) the story of a Colombian presidential candidate held hostage by leftist guerrillas.....
