Texas Based Podcast SFS TV Boasts Big Numbers

Film showcase produced with university students from New York, Los Angeles, Texas, and France finds global audience with new technology.

The groundbreaking new vodcast (video podcast) series “SFS TV” is off and running. Since premiering the pilot episode in early January, and officially launching on January 30th, the series devoted to showcasing student short films from around the globe has seen strong numbers.

Executive Producer and creator Juan Garcia says “As of February 15th, only halfway though February, we’ve broken our previous download numbers and subscriptions from January. We’re more than pleased with those numbers, especially since vodcasting is still in the experimental stages, and has yet to become the part of the mass entertainment norm.”

Although vodcasting is not yet part of the global lexicon, the world is catching on quickly. Some podcasts now boast more than 10,000 subscribers, and “SFS TV” aims to become one of those programs.

“Thanks to this new technology created by Apple, independent programs like “SFS TV” can find their audience faster and more effectively than ever before. With video on demand expanding, the public no longer has to wait for their program to air when networks choose. Instead, the public can find product that interests them, and we think audiences will appreciate the professional quality of [SFS,” Garcia explains.

More than just allowing for audiences to find new forms of entertainment, podcasting and vodcasting are good examples of how media suppliers can connect with the global public and share information faster than before (as iTunes makes all podcasts on their site available in over twelve countries). This new technology is good news for content producers too. A good example of this is the recent test connection the Austin-based team did with “SFS TV” mentor Adam Kaiser from his home in New York. The production was able to have Kaiser direct an episode via Apple’s new iChat AV, allowing host Sara Hickman to communicate with the director though a computer screen.

While the exact future of how podcasting and vodcasting will fit into the mainstream media hierarchy is still to be seen, one thing is for sure; the dawn of a new entertainment revolution has begun, and the future of media distribution for independents is brighter than ever.

“SFS TV” is a showcase for student films that is created in participation with university students who have the unique opportunity to write, direct, shoot, and edit the show along side mentors from New York, Los Angeles, Austin, and Lyon, France. “SFS TV” will soon be featured at an official screening during this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in March.
