Strong German presence in Montreal

EDELWEISS PIRATES in competition at Montreal

A total of 21 German films and two German-international co-productions can be seen at the 28th World Film Festival Montreal (26.08.- 06.09.2004).

Niko von Glasow has been invited to the festival's official competition with EDELWEISS PIRATES (EDELWEISSPIRATEN). Loosely based on actual events, the films tells the story of a group of youths in Cologne-Ehrenfeld led by 17-year-old Karl Ripke towards the end of the war. „Edelweiss pirates“ was the name taken by thousands of youths who no longer wanted to submit to the pressure of the Hitler dictatorship: they picked fights with the Hitler Youth, refused to do military service and sabotaged the war effort. In addition, the co-productions WAITING FOR THE CLOUDS by Yesim Ustaoglu
(France/Germany/Greece) and THE SYRIAN BRIDE by Eran Riklis
(Germany/Israel/France) have been invited to screen in the international competition of Montreal. COLD SHADOWS (KALTE SCHATTEN) by Peter Kocyla and SONNTAG IM AUGUST by Marc Meyer will take part in the short film competition.

Eight German films will be presented in the Cinema of Europe sidebar: HEAD-ON (GEGEN DIE WAND) by Fatih Akin, WANTED! (NACHBARINNEN) by Franziska Meletzky, OEGELN by Patrick Lambertz, AS QUIET AS A MOUSE (MUXMÄUSCHENSTILL) by Marcus Mittermeier, SEEK ME NOT (SUCH MICH NICHT) by Tilman Zens, SUGAR ORANGE by Andreas Struck, YUGOTRIP by Nadya Derado and BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY (ZWISCHEN TAG UND NACHT) by Nicolai Rohde. Moreover, five German shorts will be shown: ANGEKOMMEN by Stefan Bühling, HEIMKEHR by Arman Nadjim, RESTORED WEEKEND by Gerd Gockell, THE SWIMMER (DER SCHWIMMER) by Klaus Huettmann and DIE ÜBERRASCHUNG by Lancelot von Naso.

NAPOLA by Dennis Gansel and THE EDUKATORS (DIE FETTEN JAHRE SIND VORBEI) by Hans Weingartner will be shown Out of Competition.

The Documentaries of the World sidebar will be screening THE CENTER (DIE
MITTE) by Stanislaw Mucha, DIE SPIELWÜTIGEN by Andres Veiel and TEXAS-KABUL by Helga Reidemeister.
