San Diego Selects Crowe

San Diego Film Critics Society Chooses Best of 2000 Almost
Famous
, the loosely autobiographical story of former teenage Rolling
Stone
journalist Cameron Crowe, was chosen December 20 as the best film
of 2000 by the San Diego Film Critics Society. The critics also chose Crowe
as best director, and his own screenplay for the film as best screenplay of
the year. The society, comprising newspaper, television, magazine, radio and
Internet critics working in San Diego County, chose Russell Crowe as best actor
for his performance in Gladiator. The vote for best actress was a tie
between Laura Linney for her work in the critically acclaimed family drama You
Can Count On Me
, and Julia Roberts, who portrayed the unlikely legal
activist in Erin Brockovich. Frances McDormand was chosen as best supporting
actress for her role as the wise and worried mother in Almost Famous,
while Benicio Del Toro was chosen as best supporting actor for his work as a
morally conflicted Tijuana police officer in Traffic. Robert Nelson Jacobs was
honored in the best adapted screenplay category for the comedy-drama Chocolat.
The Iranian fable The Color of Paradise was chosen as best foreign language
film. John Mathieson won honors for best cinematography for his work on Gladiator.
The San Diego critics also honored Joaquin Phoenix for his body of work during
2000, citing his performances in Gladiator, The
Yards
and Quills.
