Pipilotti Rist ' “Pepperminta” to premiere at the Seville Festival

The projection will coincide with the ACCA exhibition titled Looking Machines in which the Swiss artist is participating
The queen of visual narrative in contemporary art is opening her first feature film “Pepperminta” at the Seville Festival. With this, she is “taking another step on the creative scale and at a dramatic level” according to the artist. In this film Pipilotti uses fantasy and colours in the search for a more humane world. Both names (Pipilotti and Pepperminta) come from the character of Pippi Longstocking.

Her work is present in the most important exhibition venues, from Paris to San Francisco, from Istanbul to Tokyo, and in particular at MOMA in New York which also bought her clip “Ever is Over All”. The sixteen videoclips of “Open My Glade” were reproduced each hour on a screen in New York’s Times Square, as part of an initiative by the programme Messages to the Public. The artist’s work “Your Space Capsule” can be seen in the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art in Seville, as part of the exhibition “Looking Machines. Or how images originate” which is being held in parallel with the Seville Festival. In “Your Space Capsule” Pipilotti brings together the characteristic apparatus of two media: the optical box and the cinema, two looking machines which activate, in the subconscious, universes of images and symbols.

Over the course of her career, Pipilotti has accumulated important awards and recognition such as the 2000 Award at the Venice Biennale and, this year, the award from the Joan Miró Foundation for “the capacity for surprise and provocation in Rist’s work over the last 20 years”.

In the film “Pepperminta”, colours are the best friends of the young protagonist, and strawberries are her pets. Pepperminta knows amazing remedies for freeing people from their fears. She wants everyone to see the world with their favourite colours. Werwen, a chubby, timid youth, whom Pepperminta finds highly attractive, and the beautiful Edna, who talks to tulips, join together on a thrilling mission. “Pepperminta” is a visually amazing fantasy which lifts your spirits.

Pipilotti Rist is one of the artists who have made the biggest impression on artistic practices since the 90s. Her work falls within the context of a narrative art, the theme of which is the memory of experience that isn’t past but is in the present. Rist’s video installations, while autobiographical in a way, but situated beyond the mere personal anecdote, make the body, desire, sexuality, fluidity, movements and music their leitmotif.

In contrast with many other conceptual artists, her colourful, musical works transmit a feeling of happiness and simplicity. Today her works are found in the most important art collections throughout the world.
