Palm Springs to open with Golden Bowl

Nortel
Networks Palm Springs International Film Festival

January 11 - 22 (Palm Spring, CA)

The
12th Annual festival will open with James Ivory's The
Golden Bowl
on January 11, 2001. Recreating Henry James'
engaging novel on screen, Ivory's latest effort features a star-studded
cast, including Angelica Houston, Uma Thurman, Nick Nolte, Kate
Beckinsale and Jeremy Northam. Ten prestigious film entries were
selected to be featured at this year's festival, including Ivory's
entry.

Throughout
the 12-day event, the specially chosen films will be showcased in
the confab's highly regarded "Gala Screenings" series. Highlighted
works will include entries from a variety of noteworthy directors,
including Ed Harris, in his much-anticipated directorial debut,
and Liv Ullman. The slate of Gala Screenings, featuring top-notch
submissions from around the world, will be screened throughout the
festival.

"Our Gala Screenings are unique in that they represent, and give
special recognition to, the best filmmakers from across the globe,"
said Jennifer Stark, associate director of programming.

Denis Pregnolato, the festival's executive director, further states,
"Each year, our programmers carefully review festival entries and
select a small group of outstanding films that clearly exude a special
quality, setting them apart from the rest. These premier movie events
give attendees the opportunity to mingle with some of the world's
most distinguished directors, producers and actors. From China and
Sweden to France and Italy, we are thrilled to bring the very best
of world cinema to Palm Springs."

The festival will
honor Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage with the Charles A. Crain
Desert Palm Award, director Ridley Scott with the Director's Achievement
Award, and composer, Randy Newman with the Frederick Loewe Award,
it was announced by executive director Denis Pregnolato and Awards
producer Scott Mauro. The Awards Gala will be held on Saturday,
January 13, 2001 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
