New Book Gives Essential Tips on Aquiring Film Distribution

Former Hollywood foreign sales agent for independent films reveals secrets to getting distribution for movies.

Even though most filmmakers make their movies with the ultimate goal of distribution in mind, very few actually get distribution deals for their finished films. Why?

Because many filmmakers rush into the filmmaking process without doing their homework in advance. In reality though, preparation and research go a long way in ultimately acquiring distribution for your film.

According to Stacey Parks, author of “Insiders Guide to Film Distribution” there are some little known tricks of the distribution trade that can actually give you an exponentially better shot at getting your film distributed, and which you can start focusing on and even implementing before and during the production process.

“Unfortunately for the filmmaker while the demand for movies continues to rise, the supply of movies on the market continues to rise as well” says Parks. “However, do not get discouraged. The other reason that fewer and fewer independent films are getting distribution is because most filmmakers do not consider the marketability of their films in advance. Fortunately there are simple and viable solutions for this. Take the time to learn about the realities of the market in advance, and then proceed accordingly. You will save yourself a lot of headaches and heartbreaks down the line.”

In addition to offering real filmmaker case studies and interviews by several key industry figures, Parks’s distribution manual outlines dozens of ideas that struggling filmmakers can implement right away. Some of the ideas presented in this manual include…

• Spend a little bit of time studying what kinds of films sell and why. You will be able to glean enough insight to assist you in making educated decisions throughout your production process.

• During production is actually a great time to start creating a buzz for your film, which can later be used as a marketing tool for sales agents and distributors. One way to go about this is through production diaries or a production blog.

• A trailer of your film is equally as important, or in some cases more important, than the film itself. A good trailer, front-loaded with action and set to good music, is the primary sales tool for your movie

A former foreign sales agent herself, Parks also offers filmmakers advice on finding, retaining, and negotiating with sales agents and producers reps, while also outlining several effective do it yourself approaches to distribution. Exclusive interviews include: Michael Baker, head of acquisitions for Think Film, Paul Bales, director of SAG Indie, Stephen Winter, Producer on Tarnation, and Betsy Chasse Producer on What the Bleep do We Know?
