Marion Hänsel gives Variety Cinema Militans InterviewMarion Hänsel gives the Variety Cinema Militans Interview as part of the Holland Film Meeting during the 26th Netherlands Film Festival. On Saturday 30 September at 17:30, the filmmaker will get into conversation with Variety's Katja Hofmann about her vision on the future of cinema. The fixed theme of this section, 'the position and viability of cinema in the present age', is an adaptation of the theme of Dutch film theoretician Menno ter Braak's essay 'Cinema Militans' (1926). Directly after the Variety Cinema Militans Interview, the festival will screen Marion Hänsel's CLOUDS: LETTERS TO MY SON (2001), in which a mother's voice-over talks about intimacy, fortune and grief, while cloud formations float by in Iceland, Scotland, Madagascar and South Africa. Marion Hänsel (Marseille, 1949), established her production company 'Man's Films' in 1977. LE LIT (1982) was her first feature film. She also directed films like BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA (1995), SUR LA TERRE COMME AU CIEL (1991) and LES NOCES BARBARES (1987). With the Netherlands, 'Man's Films' co-produced SCIENCE FICTION (Dany Deprez, 2002) and DE STILLE OCEAAN (Digna Sinke, 1983), plus Oscar winner NO MAN'S LAND (Danis Tanovic, 2001). Her latest film SOUNDS OF SAND will have its première in the competition programme of the San Sebastian film festival. The Variety Cinema Militans Interview is addressed in the Daily of Variety.com and in the Weekly Variety. In previous years, the Variety Cinema Militans Lecture was delivered by István Szabó (2005), Agnieszka Holland (2004), Peter Greenaway (2003), Mira Nair (2002), Tom Tykwer (2001) and other filmmakers. 11.09.2006 | Editor's blog Cat. : Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA Cinema Militans Cinema of Belgium Cinema of the Netherlands De stille Oceaan Digna Sinke Digna Sinke Entertainment Entertainment Films Iceland István Szabó Katja Hofmann Madagascar Marion Hänsel Marion Hänsel Marion Hänsel Marseille Mira Nair Oscar Peter Greenaway Scotland Sounds of Sand South Africa the 26th Netherlands Film Festival the San Sebastian Film Festival Tom Tykwer Tom Tykwer Variety Independent Interviews FESTIVALS PEOPLE PROS
