Lund International Fantastic Film Festival awards

The 11th edition of Lund International Fantastic Film Festival in Sweden closed on Sunday the 25th with an award ceremony at Filmstaden in Lund. The following prizes were awarded:

The Silver Méliès for best feature film was awarded to:
The Descent (Neil Marshall, UK 2005)
“The film works on many levels, both primal and psychological. In the hands of a lesser director, this could have been just another forgettable horror film - but as it is The Descent manages to be realistic, emotional, and absolutely terrifying from start to finish.”

The winner of the award for best short film went to:
Der Beste (Arne Jysch & Rasmus Borowski, Germany 2004)
”Because it’s very visual, well put together, and most of all a cool and fun homage to the horror comics from the fifties.”

Honorary Mention from the Jury:
MirrorMask (Dave McKean, UK 2004)
”For it’s visual fireworks and uncompromising approach that will certainly serve as an inspiration to future directors. A truly fantastic film.”

The Méliès awards for the best European fantastic films was awarded by a jury that consisted of Nathan Larson (rock and roll film composer from New York, now living in Malmö), Emma Gray Munthe (film critic and editor from Stockholm), and Måns Nilsson (radio and TV show host from Malmö).

The Méliès Awards, named after the French film pioneer Georges Méliès, is handed out by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF) to promote the European production of fantastic film. Ten members of the Federation each chooses one competitor in each section to compete for the Golden Méliès for the best European fantastic film at Espoo Ciné in Finland in August 2006. Sweden’s member of the Federation is Lund International Fantastic Film Festival. In 2007, the Golden Méliès will be awarded in Lund. For more information on the Méliès competition: www.melies.org
