Irish Film Institute Annual Horrorthon 23rd -27th October

Brave cinema-goers who join hundreds of genre-aficionados making their way to the IFI for Horrorthon can expect a relentless weekend of guts, gore, shocks and sheer psychological terror interrupted only by darkly comic cackles and kitsch classics. The popular festival is back for the 11th year running with a programme that is bigger, bloodier and better than ever.
Announcing the programme Ed King, the Horrorthon festival director said ‘When Horrorthon first started in 1998 as a one day event I would never have expected it to grow as strongly as it did over the last ten years. This year we have some great treats in store for the festival goers. The biggest film this year is probably Martyrs, which is actually the most disturbing film I've seen in years. In fact the screening I attended had many people in shock afterwards.’
Other highlights from this year’s yet-to-hit-the-cinemas films include Quarantine which provides a bone-chilling remake of the recent Spanish hardcore horror [REC] featuring psycho-enducing pathogens while Not Quite Hollywood takes a nostalgic look at the phenomenon of Ozploitation genre movies. The dark side of the Irish psyche is explored in Ghostwood, the new feature debut of young Irish director, Justin O’Brien.
Horrorthon will also unleash a whole stream of classic horror movies on to the big screen. This year’s favourites include the tabloid-reviled Child’s Play, featuring the cuddliest killer Chucky, a chance to catch Evil Dead II for the last time before it is remade as a musical and Bram Stoker’s Dracula making a welcome return to Stoker’s hometown.
Full details of all the films can be found in the Horrorthon programme available soon from the IFI or on www.ifi.ie. Bookings can be made in person at the IFI, online at www.ifi.ie or by telephone on 01 679 3477.
