ICFF MANAKI BROTHERS Golden Camera 300 award to W Carvalho

This year, the winner of the Life Achievement Award Golden Camera 300 for the outstanding contribution to the world cinematography, at the 29th ICFF MANAKI BROTHERS, is the leading Brazilian and world cinematographer - WALTER CARVALHO.
Walter CARVALHO - cinematographer, photographer, director, screen writer, producer was born in 1947 in the city of João Pessoa, in one of the 26 states of the Brazilian Federation.

He moves to Rio de Janeiro in 1968 to study graphic design. The start of his rich career is essentially related to his older brother-director, screen writer, producer, editor and actor – Vladimir Carvalho (1931) who introduces him to the film art as a cameraman in the film O País de São Saruê in 1971.
Walter’s family connection continues with his super talented son Lula Carvalho, who naturally springs from the camera school of his great father, who showed him all the secrets of the camera and film photography.
In his rich career as a cinematographer Walter Carvalho has shoot over 60 feature films, and directed 4 that have also brought him numerous festival awards. Those are the films MOACIR, BRUTAL ART, 2005; CAZUZA - O TEMPO NÃO PÁRA, 2004; LUNARIO PERPETUO, 2003; JANELA DA ALMA, 2001). The most interesting and the most symbolical connection with his son Lula is their latest feature project, the Brazilian-Hungarian co-production BUDAPEST, directed by the father Walter, where the cinematographer is the son Lula.
Walter CARVALHO is the youngest laureate of the Life Achievment GOLDEN CAMERA 300 who with his work to date has earned the right to enter in the club of the great masters of the Manaki Brothers Festival. The festival organizers are especially proud to award the highest award to Walter taking into consideration that he is deeply connected to the ICFF MANAKI BROTHERS, as an absolute champion by winning 2 Golden Cameras 300: in 1998 for the film CENTRAL DO BRASIL (dir. Walter Salles) and in 2002 for the film TO THE LEFT OF THE FATHER (dir. Luis Fernando Carvalho) and a Silver Camera 300 in 1996 for the film FOREIGN LAND (directed by the team Walter Salles-Daniela Thomas).
All three films are characterized by the great mastery of the artist-cinematographer Walter CARVALHO, each in its own way.
From the cooperation between the director Walter Salles and Walter Carvalho as his creative partner-cinematographer, we should undoubtedly include the film ABRIL DESPEDACADO/BEHIND THE SUN (2001). We have to mention the two films signed by the director Karim Ainouz: MADAME SATÃ (2001) and SUELY IN THE SKY (2006). Carvalho is the closest to his documentary sensibility as director and cinematographer, in the fierce prison drama CARANDIRU(2003) directed and co-written by the experiences older generation Hector Babenco.
For his entire scope of over 60 completed films as cinematographer and director Carvalho has won over 40 awards on the festivals in Brazil, Latin America and the world.
His is making his fifth film as director, BUDAPEST in the peak of his creative energy. As our youngest laureate of the Life Achievement Award, he has the objective possibility to further continue creating new films, as a leading cinematographer with whom is a privilege to work and whose films will continue to inspire and astonish us.
