Göteborg Film Fest launches Ingmar Bergman award

During the 30th anniversary of the Göteborg International Film Festival the inaugurational Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award will be presented to “a director making his or her debut with a film dealing with, in a broad sense, issues displaying a dynamic or experimental consciousness of the cinematic means of expression”.

The award consists of one weeks stay at the Bergman Week at Fårö during the summer of 2007, and a beautiful engraved stone from Ingmar Bergman’s own beach at Fårö.

Ingmar Bergman describes the award as a tribute to “the singular art of the twenty-four frames”.

- A way of encouraging young film makers to deal with the really important issues, in a time where the film industry more and more has taken on the shape and form of a butchery and fornication business, says Ingmar Bergman.

- With the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award the Göteborg International Film Festival wants to emphasize the significance the films of Ingmar Bergman still carries as a source of inspiration for young film makers worldwide, says festival director Jannike Åhlund.

All of the debut films invited to the Göteborg International Film Festival in January 2007 are eligible for nomination for the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award. The five nominated films will be presented in the beginning of December.
