Godfrey Reggio to receive SFiFF Lifetime Achievement AwardGodfrey Reggio to receive SFiFF Lifetime Achievement AwardAward-Winning filmmaker Godfrey Reggio will receive the Santa Fe International Film Festival (SFiFF) Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival's 14th edition, presented this upcoming October Award-Winning filmmaker Godfrey Reggio will receive the Santa Fe International Film Festival (SFiFF) Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival's 14th edition, presented this upcoming October. The Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony will be followed by the World Premiere of Reggio's latest film, Once Within a Time.
Once Within a Time is a film by director Godfrey Reggio and his long-time collaborators composer Philip Glass and filmmaker Jon Kane. The film is in the form of a bardic documentary, a fantasy of the real with themes of climate change and the perils of technology, and their effects on future generations. It is geared towards children—not the children of the future, children are the future. It is their clarion call to resistance and a call to hope. It asks the evocative question, which age is this, the sunset or the dawn?
“Godfrey Reggio has pushed us to explore the depths of our own imaginations,” said SFiFF Artistic Director, Jacques Paisner. “His films have done for filmmaking what the paintbrush did for painting.”
Reggio's film Koyaanisqatsi (1982) its title inspired by the insight of the Hopi word meaning “life out of balance” is the first film in Reggio's Qatsi trilogy, which also includes the films Powaqqatsi (1988) "life in transformation," and Naqoyqatsi (2002) "life as war." The soundtracks for all three films were composed by Philip Glass.
A New Mexico resident since the 1960s, his moving documentary Anima Mundi (1993), on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund, revealed how much we share the planet with other creatures, a montage of intimate images of over seventy animal species that celebrates the magnificence and variety of the world's biological diversity. His film Visitors premiered with a live orchestra at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
