Ghent gives Lifetime Achievement Award to Agnes Varda

During the 33rd Flanders International Film Festival-Ghent French filmmaker Agnes Varda will receive the Joseph Plateau Lifetime Achievement Award. As a tribute to Varda, the festival is putting together a retrospective of her film work. In cooperation with S.M.A.K. (the Ghent museum of contemporary art), two of her recent video installations will be shown.

Agnes Varda is the leading lady of the French Nouvelle Vague movement that thrilled the European film audience in the sixties. With films as La Pointe-courte (1956), Cleo from 5 to 7 (1961), and Le Bonheur (1956) Varda showed she was as talented as the other Nouvelle Vague icons François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. For Cleo from 5 to 7 Varda even received a Golden Palm at the 1961 Cannes Festival. The award-winning film will be shown at the 33rd Flanders International Film Festival-Ghent in the section Memory of Film, together with other films of Varda such as Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse (2000).

For her impressive career Varda will receive the Joseph Plateau Lifetime Achievement Award during the festival. In cooperation with S.M.A.K. (the Ghent museum of contemporary art), two of her recent video installations will be shown.

In previous editions this award was als presented to Robert Altman, Tony Curtis, Sir Peter Ustinov, Jeanne Moreau, Alain Resnais, Lord Richard Attenborough and Stanley Donen.
