German Films Go North: Happy cinema-goers and filmmakers

The evening of the second Sunday in Advent saw the cinema projector in Stockholm being turned off for „German Films Go North".
In retrospect, one can say that the fourth Festival of German Films surpassed the success of the previous year. Both the audience figures and the interest of the press and distributors were higher.
In Copenhagen (26 – 29 November), the most enthusiastic reception was given to the film THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (AUF DER ANDEREN SEITE) by Fatih Akin, which won the Audience Award. Director Martin Gypkens also received much praise from the Danish audience on the opening evening for his film NOTHING BUT GHOSTS (NICHTS ALS GESPENSTER). Particular attention was also given to the film THE RED ELVIS (DER ROTE ELVIS) by Leopold Gruen who had personally travelled to Copenhagen ahead of the festival for numerous press interviews. Other films in the program were AND ALONG COME TOURISTS (AM ENDE KOMMEN TOURISTEN) by Robert Thalheim, FASHION VICTIMS (REINE GESCHMACKSACHE) by Ingo Rasper, YELLA by Christian Petzold and KARGER by Elke Hauck

The audience favourite in Stockholm (6 – 9 December) was the opening film THE COUNTERFEITERS (DIE FAELSCHER) by Stefan Ruzowitzky. After the screening, there was a long and interesting conversation with the director who was thanked by the audience for his film. Martin Gypkens found to his delight that he was the man of the moment: after the screening of NOTHING BUT GHOSTS (NICHTS ALS GESPENSTER) he was surrounded by enthusiastic members of the audience. The comedy FASHION VICTIMS (REINE GESCHMACKSACHE) by Ingo Rasper was also very well received by the audience, and the same went for NEVERMORE (NIMMERMEER) by Toke Constantin Hebbeln, HOW TO COOK YOUR LIFE by Doris Doerrie and AND ALONG COME TOURISTS (AM ENDE KOMMEN TOURISTEN) by Robert Thalheim.

It was the first time this year that the NEXT GENERATION 2007 reel of shorts was presented directly at the film schools in Denmark and Sweden. The students were very interested in the works of the German film students.
