ТНЕ RUSSIAN FEDERATION STATE INSTITUTE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY (VGIK) named after S.A. Gerasimov
The Basic methods of professional training were worked out by Lev Kuleshov,
Sergey Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Alexandr Dovzhenko, Mikhail Romm, Eduard Tisse, Anatoliy Golovnya and others.
Among VGIK's graduates are: A.Tarkovsky, Vasily Shukshin, Mikhail Kalatozov, Tengiz Abuladze, Sergey Bondarchuk, Sergey Parajanov, Otar Ioseliani, Sergey Rostozky, Grigory Chukhrai, Vyaheslav Tihkonov, Nonna Mordyukova, Andron Konchalovsky, Nikita Mikhalkov, Rustam Khamdamov, etc.

The Institute's foreign graduates are working in ninety countries of the world. They occupy high posts in national institutions of culture, make films, and teach in film school and academies. Film schools in Vietnam, Egypt and China were established with the assistance of VGIK instructors.

VGIK is one of the founders and а full member of the CILECT, the UNESCO international association of film and TV schools. The Institute's leading instructors hold master classes in film schools both in Russia and abroad.
VGIK trains highly qualified staff for film industry, television and other visual media:
SCREENWRITERS, FILM DIRECTORS, ACTORS, CAMERAMEN'S, SOUND DIRECTORS,
SЕТ DЕSIGNЕRS, СОSТUМЕ DЕSIGNЕRS, ANIМАТОRS AND COMPUTER GRAPHIC ARTISTS, FILM CRITICS, PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION MANAGERS, PRODUCERS.

The students receive а higher professional education, the duration of the course varying from 4 to 6 years. Those having the Bachelor degree can take the "From Bachelor to Master" course (2, 5 - 3 years). There is the Russian Language Preparatory Department for foreigners.

VGIK employs noted personalities from film industry, theatre and television who work actively in practical spheres supervise artist` classes (5 to 15 students each), give lectures, help the students in making their films at the Student Film Studio.

VGIK is the only film school in Russia that has its own STUDENT FILMSTUDIO with а complete production cycle. Here the students of all departments make their shooting exercises and graduation films. There are well-equipped laboratories and computer classes for training actors that are close to professional stage.

VGIK FILM LIBRARY has а rare collection of over 10 thousand Russian and Foreign films.
VGIK has special programs in different aspects of film training and short summer courses.

This year VGIK is turning on 85. The celebration party will take place at The Central Concert Hall on the 13-th of September. The program of Moscow Film Festival includes the visit to VGIK on the 25 of June. It also includes the retrospective of the student films made in the twenties OUR EARLY YEARS which is presented at the Film Museum on the 19-th of June.
