Frisco silent film fest opens this week

9TH ANNUAL SAN FRANCISCO SILENT FILM FESTIVAL - Saturday July 10 & Sunday, July 11

Get ready for the 9th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival! A two day-event showcasing archival silent films with live musical accompaniment, the festival will take place on July 10 and 11 at the Castro Theatre (429 Castro Street) in San Francisco.

Charlie Chaplin's son Sydney will appear in person with Jeffrey Vance, author of the beautiful new book Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema, for an onstage interview after the screening of his father's classic comedy THE CIRCUS (1928).

Other festival highlights include: THE DRAGON PAINTER (1919), accompanied by master benshi artist Midori Sawato of Tokyo who will perform traditional acted narration; THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1921) featuring Rudolph Valentino in his breakthrough role; SHENNÜ (THE GODDESS) (1934), starring the "Chinese Greta Garbo," Ruan Lingyu; and WHEN THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (1919), a wildly inventive comedy starring Douglas Fairbanks and directed by Victor Fleming (THE WIZARD OF OZ, GONE WITH THE WIND).
