Filmfest Munchen reveals Werner Herzog Retrospective

For the 25th time, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, Germany's largest summer film festival, will be attracting filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world.

Werner Herzog Retrospective
Werner Herzog, whom François Truffaut once called "Germany's most important living director" will be our guest. Herzog, who, especially in collaboration with Klaus Kinski, made such movie milestones as FITZCARRALDO and AGUIRRE – THE WRATH OF GOD will return to his hometown for the Filmfest to present his films.

Indies’ Indie–Richard Linklater
We will also be welcoming US filmmaker Richard Linklater, whose feature film SLACKER had its world premiere at the 1990 FILMFEST MÜNCHEN. No one was interested in Linklater at the time. Today, SLACKER is considered a modern classic and Linklater is regarded as one of America's most influential independent filmmakers.

Special Event in Honor of Alexander Kluge On June 26, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN will be honoring German filmmaker Alexander Kluge (75) with a special evening in Munich's Filmmuseum. Kluge will read from his books and show excerpts from his films. Munich's Lord Mayor Christian Ude will be the laudator.

Herr Maier and the Stars
For decades, Wolfgang Maier has been collecting autographs from VIPs and having his picture taken with stars. In collaboration with FILMFEST, the Munich Filmmuseum will be hosting an exhibition of the best photographs – Maier with such larger than life show biz personalities as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Klaus Kinski or Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

The roughly 200 films that we will be screening in 2007 will be clearly arranged in our traditional sections:

International Program, New German Cinema, German TV Movies, Silent Movie, Open Air, Nouveau Cinéma Français, American Independents, Kinderfilmfest

This year's Open Air section in the courtyard of the festival center at Gasteig is titled 'Filmspotting' and will be presenting discoveries and masterpieces from the 25 years of the festival's existence. Like BLOOD SIMPLE (1984), the very first Coen Brothers picture, AMÉLIE (2001) and TRAINSPOTTING (1995).
