Crouching Tiger Stands Tall in Taiwan

Golden Horse Awards

December 2

The
37th Golden Horse Film Award was held on Dec 2 in Taiwan, and the
media was mad for the brilliant presence of all the Chinese cinema
vips who appeared in couples such as Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Tony
Leung Chiu-wai (In
the Mood for Love
), Sammi Cheng Sau-man and Andy Law de-war
(Needing you), and the Bond girl Michelle Yeong Zi-King (Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon
) with her new lover.

Director Ang Lee's Chinese martial arts film, Crouching
Tiger Hidden Dragon
was the star of Taiwan's Oscars. The film,
which had its world premiere at Cannes, was nominated in 13 categories
and won six awards in Taiwan, including Best Picture. The film is
an epic love story set in mythical China and was the first action
movie from Lee, whose other films include Sense and Sensibility
and The Wedding Banquet.

Hong
Kong actress Maggie Cheung won her fourth award for best leading
actress for her role as a lovestruck neighbor in Wong Kar

Wai's
In the Mood for Love. The best leading actor award went
to Francis Ng for his role in The Mission directed by To
Kei-fung, who also won the best director award.

Director
Johnnie To Kei-fung created a bit of a controversy after the Award
celebrations when he dismissed Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Wong Kar-wai
for showing "nothing new" in In The Mood For Love. "When
you watch a Wong Kar-wai movie, it's the same thing all the time.
There's really nothing new there but foreign audiences just have
a different view of it," said To.

Maggie
Cheung Man-yuk refused to rise to the bait, however, declaring she
was just happy to keep winning acting awards. It was unforgettable
to all her fans as she burst into tears when she held the award
in her hand on the stage. It was the fifth time she has won the
prize.

Wong
Kar-wai was unable to attend the awards because he was in Paris
picking up a best foreign film award at the 2000 European
Film Awards
.

The
youngest winner was Fruit Chan's new discovery, the 11-year-old
star of Little
Cheung
, Yiu Yuet-ming, who picked up the best newcomer award
for his role as a typical Hong Kong child growing up in the streets
of Kowloon City.
