Ang Lee to Visit Bergman Week on Fårö, Sweden

Multiple Academy Award winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) describes himself as ”a huge Bergman fan”. He will visit Fårö off the coast of Sweden on July 1-2 and introduce the screening of his film The Ice Storm and also talk about his favourite Bergman film, Wild Strawberries under the heading “My Flavour of Strawberries”.

This year's "Bergman Week" presents a program filled with exciting guests representing three generations of filmmakers, a string of rarely seen Bergman films and excursions into the heart of Bergman country.

We're also happy to welcome Harriet Andersson who will talk about the Fårö shoot of Through a Glass Darkly, the first film Bergman shot on the island.

Directors Josef Fares, Teresa Fabik and Lisa Munthe, the recipients of Åse Kleveland's recycled Bergman award "The Dreamcatcher", talk about their dream projects and their thoughts on the Swedish filmmaking tradition.

Award-winning director Jens Jonsson will also be a guest speaker on the topic "Bergman – the last television aestheticist?" We will also celebrate recently departed director Vilgot Sjöman (I am Curious Yellowwith film screenings and seminars. Sjöman’s documentary TV series "Ingmar Bergman gör en film" (Ingmar Bergman makes a film) will screen during the week.

We also celebrate Mozart's 250th birthday by opening the week in Fårö church with music from "The Magic Flute", followed by a screening of Bergman's television adaptation of the opera. The opening speakers are Minister for Culture Leif Pagrotsky and choir leader Eric Ericson.

The complete program will be released on May 17 and will be available at The Bergman Week site with information about package deals and accomodation on Fårö. Ticket sales begin May 18.

The Bergman Week is a six day celebration of Ingmar Bergman’s art, with films, guests, seminars and tours to filming locations on Fårö. Bergman’s abundant work is a constant source of inspiration to filmmakers all around the world and his themes are highly relevant in our century as well! The goal of Bergman Week is to view his films in a new light and highlight the timeless themes reappearing throughout the body of his work.

Bergmanveckan is arranged by Fårö Framtid (Kerstin Kalström), Film @ Gotland (Paola Ciliberto), Göteborg Film Festival (@filmfestival.org">Jannike Åhlund and Lova Hagerfors) and Gotland University (Elisabet Edlund), in agreement with Ingmar Bergman.
