10th Sheffield International Documentary Festival

SHEFFIELD INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL:
8-14 NOVEMBER 2004

Bringing together confessions in Jesus and the freezing of Grandpa in Colorado, the Sheffield International Documentary Festival presents a colourful collection of the most thought provoking, entertaining and influential documentaries from around the world.

Now in its 10th year, the Sheffield International Documentary Festival, which runs 8–14 November 2004, is the UK’s premier festival dedicated to the documentary genre and its filmmakers. With ringing endorsements and support from the UK’s television and film industry, Sheffield 2004 is the essential event for anyone with a love of insightful and entertaining factual film and television.

This year the festival will be showing over 75 films from more than 20 countries, many of which will be receiving their UK premieres at the festival, showcasing some of the greatest talent working in the genre today.

Confirmed highlights include: ‘Jesus, You Know’, a portrayal of six believers and their relationships with God, ‘Grandpa is Still in the Tuff Shed’, a hilarious account of little town Nederland, Colorado and the bizarre legacy of Norwegian Trygve Bauge and his private cryogenics enterprise. ‘Tintin and Me’, which combines archive material and animation to explore the life of Herge, the creator of Tintin is to receive its UK premiere.

Further highlights include the following of a blind man and his cat through the streets of Moscow in ‘In The Dark’, ‘Justice’, a narrative exploring the relationship between justice and power in Brazil and ‘Molly and Mobarak’, a bittersweet love story between an Afghan refugee and his local teacher set in Australia.

The Sheffield International Documentary Festival will also be running sessions and master classes², designed to provide a practical insight into the world of factual film. This year’s Channel 4 Interview is with Morgan Spurlock; maker of one of the most controversial and successful documentaries in recent times, Super Size Me. Filmmakers Joan Churchill (Aileen: Life And Death OF A Serial Killer) and Nicholas Philibert (Etre Et Avoir) will also be sharing their skills and experience.

Brent Woods, Director of the Sheffield International Documentary Festival said, “Sheffield International Documentary Festival is the UK’s essential filmmaking event with a policy for introducing challenging, entertaining and inspirational subject matter to its audiences.“

“The Sheffield International Documentary Festival provides an environment where documentary filmmaking is treated without prejudice and challenges its participants and delegates to explore, experiment and reinvent creative standards for the genre.”
