HOT SPOT FOR DOCS: Documentary Festivals Calling / Ones to watch / Docu Fests Highlights and Awards / Submit Seattle Documentary Association Film Retreat for Makers! DocForest is a documentary retreat in the Pacific Northwest hosted by Seattle Documentary Association (SeaDoc), which cultivates and supports an equitable and professional community of nonfiction storytellers. From tents to now mountain cabins, for over a decade DocForest has provided much needed space for professional and creative development on projects that will go out into the world and inform our larger media and cultural landscape.
DocForest 2019 is taking place for the first time at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts in Leavenworth, WA.
The opening night programming centers around producers from east of the mountains along with members of the Wenatchi Tribe, with a land acknowledgement ceremony and showcase of locally produced work in order to celebrate our host community. Saturday programming includes panels about editing best practices, ethics of storytelling in communities, navigating self care in long term projects, and works in progress sharing sessions. There will also be a guided hike, hammock hang outs and nightly bonfires for essential unstructured time for relationship building.
Our 2019 Keynote Speakers is Producer Basil Shadid, whose work includes Academy Nominated Iraq in Fragments as well as Angels are Made of Light and Drag Becomes Him. He will be speaking about industry realities of financing models and various interpretations of what it means to be a successful filmmaker while actualizing creative vision. DocForest concludes with an industry panel on broadcasting and festival distribution, followed by a closing ceremony with special giveaways.
