NEXT Pavilion Focuses on the Future of Cinema

For the first time this year, the Marché du Film is introducing NEXT, a new pavilion dedicated to the future of cinema, situated in the heart of the Village International Pantiero.

For the duration of the 67th Festival de Cannes, NEXT is hosting a wide range of exhibitors who will share new economic models with the Marché’s participants. These exhibitors include: B3 Biennal of the Moving Image, Cineuropa, Cinext, Connect 4 Climate, Cross Video Days, Gathr Films, IndieFlix, Kweb, Mubi, Power to the Pixel, Touscoprod, Wallimage, and We Want Cinema.

NEXT is also a program of round-tables, workshops, special presentations and networking events with leading players on new and alternative forms of storytelling, production, financing and the distribution of films.

“One of the goals of the Marché is to anticipate on the needs of our participants and to explore and highlight as far as possible new potential and possibilities for the film industry. In this sense, NEXT becomes a privileged lab in Cannes to kick start ideas, engage professionals and examine new challenges ahead”, explained Jérôme Paillard, Executive Director of the Marché du Film.

Round-Tables

NEXT will open with a round-table focusing on the realities of a digital demand-driven age, hosted by speaker Philip Knatchbull, CEO of Curzon Cinema World. It will be followed by a series of round-tables, moderated by film and media expert Michael Gubbins of Sampomedia, on how to work the crowds, build awareness and empower audiences.

Special Presentations

The pavilion will also host some exceptional presentations.
Power to the Pixel, the digital and cross-media market and company, is bringing a wide variety of international heads of funds and commissioners active in backing new types of entertainment products, audience engagement tools and cross-media projects.
Wallimage, the funds from Wallonia, will introduce seven companies active in the fields of immersive experiences, virtual realities and connected objects.

Cross Video Days, the European cross-media content market, will host a pitching session of cinema and transmedia projects. The four selected projects are: LE JUDAS by Ziad Touma (Canada), DREAM CHANNEL by Jonny Peters (Australia), MULEUM by Julie Friis Walenciak (Denmark) and the mockumentary HOUSTON, IMAMO PROBLEM! by Ziga Virc (Slovenia).

Workshops

Workshops scheduled for this year’s program include one on DIY distribution with Scilla Andreen from the independent film streaming platform, IndieFlix. Caspar Sonnen from the IDFA Doc Lab, will provide an overview on the current state of Interactive Cinema while Nicolas Bailly from the French financing platform Touscoprod will present the new challenges for crowdfunding platforms. Domenico Laporta will introduce a new mobile application, Movie Hunters, gamifying the movie experience in theaters.

Slam Sessions

The Slam Sessions welcome two rounds of performances: on crowdfunding with Touscoprod, Movies Angels, Aflamnah, Ulule and Vimeo, and on Cinema on Demand with Gathr Films, We Want Cinema, On Screen, La Septième Salle, I Like Cinema. Both will present the distinctive elements of the business models and will be followed by meetings with the participants.
“Next is an important initiative from the Marché du Film, which recognizes that long-awaited changes in digital technology and audience demand have converged to become business realities that cannot be ignored. The emphasis will be on sharing real experience and hard facts; on the practical rather than the theoretical. In other words, Next is now”, says media expert Michael Gubbins of Sampomedia.
The future of cinema has never been more exciting!
Opening Keynote will take place on Thursday, May 15 from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm at Palais I (Palais des Festival, level 4)
