About the film:
Today's in-Competition presentation of Antichrist is the occasion for the Danish director and veteran of many Cannes Festivals Lars von Trier to return. In 2000, Von Trier walked away with the Palme d'Or for Dancers in the Dark, and in 1996, he obtained the Grand Prix du Jury for Breaking the Waves. Europa garnered a Prix du Jury in 1991. To round out the history of the awards, Element of Crime (1984) was given the Grand Prix de la Commission Supérieure Techniqu...

Other cast member Steve Evets plays the postman from Manchester whose life is in upheaval, and who attempts to ward o...

Brian Johnson of Macleans.ca blog said it best that "This is not your daddy's chain-saw massacre." Walking into The Antichrist, Danish bad-boy Lars Von Trier's latest shocker for Cannes audiences, no one expects a fairy-tale. What you get however pushes the limits of gruesomely disturbing. [warning: spoiler alert. bigger warning: really gruesome and pardon me but fucked-up movie] The film tells the story of an unnamed couple- played by Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbour...

Presented in the Certain Regard section, the second feature film by Mia Hansen-Løve, entitled Father of My Children , screens today. "This film stems from my encounter with Humbert Balsan," explained the director. "I first met him in early 2004. He wanted to produce my first film. His enthusiasm and trust were decisive for me in All is Forgiven. I didn’t write this movie out of gratitude, however, but because of Humbert Balsan’s personality. He had an exce...
For the first time in his career, Pavel Lounguine, laureate of the Director's Prize in 1990 for Taxi Blues and a Special Mention for the whole cast of La Noce (2000), and President of the Caméra d’Or Jury in 2007, is discovering the honors of screening a film in Certain Regard with today's presentation of Tzar. This particular tyrant is Ivan IV, alias Ivan the Terrible, whose iron fist reigned supreme in 16th-century Russia. A single man had the temerity to oppose him: his c...

One year after the in-Competition presentation of Serbis, Brillante Mendoza is back in Cannes as the advocate for his seventh feature film, Kinatay, competing for the Palme d'Or. In Kinatay, which means "massacre" in Filipino, the streets of Manila turn into a hellhole for Peping, a young criminology student. As a junior member of a local gang, he is never trusted with anything big. One day, however, his crime bosses offer him a lot of money for a very ...
About the film:
Undeniably, one of the major events of the day is the arrival in Cannes of Johnny Hallyday and Hong Kong director Johnnie To for the Competition screening of Vengeance, a chillingly somber crime movie of the sort only Johnnie To knows the recipe for. France's national rock star, surrounded by To regulars like Simon Yam, Suet Lam, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, and Lam Ka Tung. He plays a retired hit man who decides to ply his trade again to avenge the murder of his daug...

Celebrating their 26th year, Sundance is on the quest of finding new talent with the goal of coming back "fresher" every year. Held at the American Pavilion, Sundance Film Director, John Cooper and Program Director, Trevor Groth, discussed the ever-changing world o...

Among the many people who flock to the festival each year are film students hoping to get their foot a little father into the door. Each year hundreds of film students apply to internships with various companies represented at the festival and the lucky ones are given an opportunity to expecience some of the magic and chaos of Cannes. I spoke with a few such students who were excited to share their experience in Cannes thus far with filmfestivals.com. Chr...
With director Ang Lee and stars Emile Hirsch, Imelda Staunton and Demetri Martin present, the premier of "Taking Woodstock" last night was an event not to be missed. While the film's mixed reviews were nothing short of extraordinary, on the contrary the crowd's response to the film was a pleasant one. It could have been the fact that it was my first premier and I was not used to sitting in an tuxedo for two hours while watching a film on 1969's Woodstock, but it plainly did not hold my...

Selected to screen in the Certain Regard section today, Samson and Delilah by Warwick Thornton is the first feature from the Australian filmmaker, and thus in competition for a Camera D’or. The two promising young actors, Rowan McNamara and Marissa Gibson drive this road movie through the outbac...
