VIDEO Thierry Fremaux introduces the team of Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” screening out of competition is the fifth (and perhaps final) instalment of the epic stories of Indiana Jones

Cinema’s most famous archaeologist returns for a new adventure in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, presented Out of Competition. The American filmmaker James Mangolddirects this feature film in which Harrison Ford as “Indy” faces a new Nazi threat, against the backdrop of the Cold War.

It is the late 1960s, and Dr Jones (Harrison Ford) declares his opposition to the recruitment of former Nazis as NASA scientists during the Space Race. Spurred on by his goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), the archaeologist sets off in search of the Dial of Destiny, in order to foil the plans of the ambitious Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen).

The fifth and final episode in the series by Steven Spielberg et George Lucas – now producers of the project – marks the grand return of Harrison Ford to the red carpet, 15 years after the showing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The American actor made his mark on Festival de Cannes history in the 1970s, appearing on the bill of The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now(1979), two films which won the Palme d’or, both by Francis Ford Coppola.

In this new feature film, the legendary Star Wars and Blade Runner actor is directed by James Mangold. The American director and screenwriter, who created the blockbusters Logan and Ford V Ferrari, is presenting his first film at Cannes. As with the previous episodes, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has a musical score by John Williams. This is the 112th film the composer has added his touch of genius to.
