Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

A bit of Cannes history

The Cannes Film Festival, also known as Festival de Cannes, is an international film festival held annually in Cannes, France. It was founded in 1946 and has since become one of the most prestigious and widely publicized film festivals in the world.

The festival was the brainchild of Jean Zay, the French Minister of National Education, who wanted to create an international cultural event to rival the Venice Film Festival, which had been established in 1932. The first Cannes Film Festival was originally scheduled to take place in September 1939 but was postponed due to the outbreak of World War II. It wasn't until September 20, 1946, that the first Cannes Film Festival finally took place.

The festival's main competition, the Palme d'Or, was first introduced in 1955 and has since become one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. The festival has also been known for its controversial and provocative films, such as Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" and Gaspar Noé's "Irreversible."

Over the years, the Cannes Film Festival has attracted a wide range of notable filmmakers and celebrities, including Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Woody Allen, Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. The festival also serves as a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work and gain recognition in the film industry.

Today, the Cannes Film Festival remains one of the most highly anticipated events in the film industry, attracting filmmakers, actors, and film enthusiasts from around the world.
