MERKEL - Powerful political thriller picked up for release by Paramount Pictures

The highly anticipated political-thriller Merkel, starring Imogen Kogge (Requiem) as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is set for its German theatrical release on March 28, 2020 via Paramount, it was announced today by producer, Carte Blanche International’s Alexander van Dülmen.

Bavaria Media International in association with A COMPANY is screening the film for worldwide buyers excluding Germany for the first time during the European Film Market.

“The global importance of this powerful portrait of one of the most influential leaders in modern history cannot be overstated,” said Vincent De La Tour, Paramount Pictures, Country Manager DACH. “We’re thrilled to handle the German theatrical release of Merkel and look forward to its continued success around the world.”

Stephan Wagner (Einsatz in Hamburg) directs Merkel from a script written by Florian Oeller. Producers are Carte Blanche International’s Alexander van Dülmen and Stephan Wagner alongside Andre Zoch. “Die Getriebenen” aka “Merkel” is a co-production of Carte Blanche International (Potsdam Babelsberg) with Radio Berlin Brandenburg (RBB), RBB Media, NDR in cooperation with A COMPANY FILM. The film is funded by Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg.

Merkel follows the defining moment of Angela Merkel’s chancellorship: The refugee crisis of 2015, which became Germany’s greatest upheaval since its reunification. The film charts the 60 days which led to Angela Merkel’s monumental decision to keep German borders open, a decision that will go down in history as her political legacy. Based on Robin Alexander’s bestseller, “Merkel” delivers not only a hyper-realistic, thrilling insight into modern politics but also an intimate portrait of an exceptional woman in an exceptional situation.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Paramount for the German theatrical release of Merkel,” said van Dülmen. “In these politically charged times, the film offers an unprecedented look into the decision-making process of one of the world’s most revered leaders, on one of modernity’s most divisive issues. We feel this film has fantastic global appeal so we can’t wait to introduce this powerful film to buyers at EFM.”
