 Berlinale Spotlight: Generation in Japan 2021

With its specially curated programmes, the Berlinale has been present around the world for many years. Moreover, the Berlinale Spotlight extends the festival period and makes the activities of the Berlinale visible throughout the year. Under the banner of Berlinale Spotlight: Generation and for the fourth time already, the Berlinale section Generation will present a programme of films from the last festival edition, jointly curated with the Nara International Film Festival.
The NIFF Pre-Festival Year Showcase will take place from September 18 to 20, 2021 in Nara, Japan. The festival director and Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase focuses specifically on cinema for young audiences. A Youth Jury will view the films in the Berlinale Spotlight: Generation together in the cinema. And, as the highlight, it will present the Crystal SHIKA Award to the best film.
“The films in this year’s selection are an open invitation to reflect upon the grandeur radiating from the diverse worlds young people are experiencing. I am truly delighted that, together with the NIFF, we are facilitating encounters between the films and a young audience. Encounters that could prove to be particularly important and particularly impressive this year,” says Maryanne Redpath, head of Generation.
