Nabokovian Spots in Europe

Basel pleased me with an impromptu exhibition (or, rather, collegial demonstration) of my canvas in oil and of my English poetic volumes. I was flattered by Medieval views and luxurious props for my new films if "schwarzwald". Nearby in Freiburg Tsvetaeva, my protagonist, spent your youth. At the local university chairs that I attended, tgere taught Beliy, Blok, Blavatskaya (all, characters of my former films). I was genuinely happy to watch the props for Balsaquian "Baselian Bells".

When I found myself at a local Banhoff (railway station), I as if revealed the location for Nabokovian novellas. It turned out to be just so: I visited Basel straight after Berlin, as Nabokov once had done. Also I was happy to explore the spot of Berlinnale where I had been invited by Cyril Razlogov.

Also I visited the chair of Joung, Froedian disciple. It brought me to pre-war times, the epoch of live sublimation and of revived props.

That all influenced my following screen plots of Basel and Berne. I must add that I created a row of poetic plots devoted to Berlin, Berne and Basel, in Russian. Many personages (protagonists) of the Slavonic symbolism visited it. I followed the Napoleonian itineraries in details. But back then, I couldn't fancied up that I would reach the shores of the Elba Isle. Actually my countryman also Gorky lead me there; he was a decent, kind citizen when on the Capri and even asked Stalin to take pity on Gumilyov.

I saw the places at the Rheine where Napoleo had once eaten his meals or had explored the embankment at strolls... Very few themes actually influenced myself. It was shameful for Blok and Beliy to humiliate Vyacheslav Ivanov while in Basel: they reproached him for poor occultism and for "unneededly profound poetry"... I ought to add that former Russians often turn cruel and unpardonning, when abroad. Only Arabians-out-of-Russia who are truly few, may get duly accustomed to the European mode of being. However, I was speaking French and Italian, and my family mates were immersed into German. Basel also was of Romand impact to my ear.

French people there called me, "our local Mopassan", for lyrism of my screen essays perhaps, or for my poetic stanzas. Basel is a chief character of my screen essays, by itself... By Anna Polibina-Polansky "Baselian Remembrances - 2011".
