"Over the past few years, my production studio, Saffron Splash Media , made three award-winning experimental shorts, as well as a fourth currently in post-production. The short films are based on surrealist poems inspired by my dreams which I wrote and published. These films have an intricate and intrinsic relationship with meta-cinema. As many film enthusiasts are aware, the use of meta-cinema in film is analogous to metafiction in literature. It’s a style of filmmaking in which the characters or narrator deliberately inform the audience that they are watching a film. The idea is to render a film’s true color and magical essence in its original state of making.
A recent report shows that although fiction readership has reduced dramatically, poetry readership has soared steadily over the past seven years, most notably among readers aged 14 to 35. In the age of social media, many are left feeling connected, yet lonesome. This feeling can be remedied by interior reflexivity which may be nourished by reading poetry. Similarly, meta-cinema offers non-diegetic aspects similar to the experience of sorting out our dreams. When millennial audiences watch meta-cinema films, they can
undergo the self-reflection and companion spectatorship they crave.
In light of this humanistic discovery, my production team and I believe that our experimental shorts offer a style of filmmaking that will trend in the near future. Through a meta-cinematic lens, one’s reality can be interpreted both inside and outside of diegetic storytelling. This interpretation gives the experience of watching films with more relaxed reflexivity and deeper collectivity.
