NYITVA (Open) opening new ground in Hungarian cinemaNYITVA (Open) Viewed at the Múvész art house cinema, Budapest, Nov. 21, 2018 with English subtitles. Directed by Orsi Nagypal, starring Csilla Radnay and Lehel Kovács. The subject is how the waning of sex in a long term relationship can undermine a basically good relationship.
Fanni and Bálint are a devoted couple in their early thirties who have been living together for five years as an all but married couple. They obviously love each other but realize that their sex life is on a down swing. Balint is a doctor, a urologist employed in a hospital where a tempting nurse is always flitting around. Fanni, the taller, more attractive, and stronger of the two, performs civil weddings at City Hall. When doing this she is draped in a Hungarian flag and delivers the standard marriage homilies to a variety of couples of all ages in stark contrast to her "open" outside love life. In her relationship with Balint she methodically charts the diminishing frequency of their copulation. At last Balint suggests opening the relationship up to outside affairs to find refreshment and they begin to test the waters by attending a swingers sex club. Swinging sex with multple partners then becomes the body of the film but neither Fanni nor Balint really have their heart in it because their main interest is to preserve their own relationship. However things get out of hand when both become overly jealous of a tenuous outside affair the other is having leading to Balint's moving out and their angry breakup. Of course they will rediscover each other after a while and come together again somewhat the wiser for wear and realising that there is more to a relationship than mere f***ing. What sets this picture apart is the salty language and frank approach to the subject matter that would obviously have been taboo on Hungarian screens not so long ago. Sort of conveying the feeling that the sexual revolution of the sixties in America has finally reached Hungary after half a century. Who knew that there are swinger clubs in Budapest, for example. All the actors were new faces to me and Csilla Radnay (33) who plays Fanni has the kind of feminine radiance (and great legs!) one wants to see more of. She has been very active on the stage for over a decade but this is her first major movie role and she makes the most of it. Other cast nembers were not nearly as compelling but director Orsi Nagypal clearly seems bent on opening new ground in Hungarian cinema.
Radnay Csilla, is a fresh face on Hungarian film screens
