Teenage Maya is raised in a household stricken by her father’s abandonment. Her mom, Camila, is an alcoholic, struggling to make ends meet. Camilla’s boyfriend, Diego, is an abuser who takes advantage of both Camila and Maya. When Maya is followed on social media by an attractive guy named Ray. He responds to her post and seems to genuinely care. Soon Maya begins to chat with him online more about her life and fears. Before long Ray persuades Maya to meet him in person and after a slightly rocky start over him being quite a bit older than his photos, their relationship quickly develops. Ray takes an interest in her problems and dreams and works hard to make Maya feel special. When things escalate at home, Ray encourages Maya to run away with him. Initially spoiled by Ray with new outfits, beauty treatments, and art supplies, Maya slowly begins to realize he has another agenda when he starts using her to make money. Ray persuades her to cooperate by holding everything he has done for her over her head and claiming that he loves her. Maya complies and starts being set up for appointments with Ray’s “clients”. As Ray pimps her out with more clients, Maya finds herself trapped in a sex trafficking ring with no way out. Meanwhile, her mother Camila, falls into despair after losing her daughter. After a near overdose, she agrees to get sober in order to get her daughter back. When Camila gets a call from the police saying that Maya is in their custody, she is overjoyed. However, the trauma that Maya has been through does not make her return as easy as Camila had hoped. Ray is determined not to lose his money-making asset while Camila is intent on not losing her daughter ever again. Can Camila help Maya get back on her feet, or will Maya be forever lost to the dark world she has fallen prey to? Maya will have its US premiere in LA at La Femme International film festival (Oct 19-22, 2023). We are back on-the-ground with events, mixers, awards ceremony, screenings and more with additional virtual elements online for our worldwide audiences. We will have films, seminars, awards show, special films and much more Our festival is in OCTOBER annually in Los Angeles, we will be hosting our standing room only panels and screenings as well as offering a potential online element for those that may not able to attend on the ground. Check our site as we get closer to October for full details. A Femme International Film Festival is a premier festival that focuses on platforming women filmmakers “by women, for everyone”. Our Festival was created in 2005, when it became apparent that there was a need to enhance women behind the camera as Directors, Producers, and Writers. We were the first in Los Angeles to host such an event and film festival empowering women. All those that followed are just duplicates of the movement we started over a decade ago. Through our Partners and Sponsors we have provided one-one-one meetings with our filmmakers or helped secure financing. CBS Entertainment Diversity Department and Sony Entertainment met with a selected group of our filmmakers with the goal to offer potential employment and/or placement as a director or writer under their diversity department. It is through our direct efforts that these opportunities are being secured for our LA Femme Int. Film Festival Filmmakers. As LA Femme moves into the next few years, it plans to expand its platform so that more women in the industry and from around the world can have the benefit of taking their film to the next level through increased distribution outlets, more key positions in the entertainment industry and more recognition as artistic creators emerging as leaders in the industry. Our goal is to create more such opportunities through exemplary programming, networking, and panel events. A classic professional atmosphere will create a sense of ‘opportunity’ for participants. LA Femme International Film Festival is “By Women for Everyone.” Objectives: To opening a pathway for women entering the industry by encouraging mentor-ship and artistic sharing between those women established in the field and those just beginning. To Platform new emerging talent and support established women in cross-over roles. To assist in distributing the feature films that are platformed in our festival with domestic theatrical releases and home video distribution. Emphasis: Summary: FYI- We do not pay screening fees to any filmmaker. It is a privilege to screen at this prestigious film festival.
Awards & Prizes
Our Distribution Partner screens all the films from the festival and offers distribution deals annually to those selected to screen. In the last several years countless films were awarded a full distribution deal, while other received limited distribution. We hope to see more in the future through our additional distribution partnerships. In addition, each winner receives a crystal award and prizes vary.
