Very strong presence of the Portuguese cinema in Fantasporto selections this year!

The Fantasporto 2024/44th Porto International Film Festival offers a very international program for this new edition.
It is also worth mentionning the very strong presence of the Portuguese cinema which stands out with long and short unpublished footage, as well as the films chosen by the higher cinema schools at the Fantasporto Portuguese Cinema Award 2024. Fantasporto decided to extend this visit to the Portuguese cinema by plotting the Porto Portuguese films of 2023 that It has been a success at an international level but is rarely shown in Portugal. These will be shown in a section of films for the competition. The festival will run at the Batalha Centro de Cinema from March 1 to 10 and will exhibit nearly 100 films from 34 countries, all unreleased, in the national, European, international and global arena. Most of the filmmakers and teams of the films in competition will be present, as representatives of the production companies, sales agents and international and Portuguese media.
As always, the program includes 4 competitions: the main one, the Fantastic Cinema with 30 films, a section that includes an extra of short films, the Directors' Week, the Oriente Express dedicated to Asian films and the Portuguese Cinema Award competition.
O Fantasporto is sponsored by the Portuguese State, by the Porto Municipal Chamber and by some private companies.

FEATURE FILMS

Best Cop Ever – João Bruno – 122’ –(Port) - PCP FILME-acção, sci-fi, v.o.
This film has been made especially in Portuguese cinema. It is an obvious sense that this cinema, or film, is an extremely ambitious production, without financial support, over 3 years in which the director João Bruno assumes most of the creative and image aspects, namely the realization, written by plots, VFX, special effects, prop making and concept art, as well as the interpretation of the main role. The second director, the film was made in English (with legends in Portuguese) “only by artistic choice, to add to the almost ethereal, distant and alienating atmosphere of the film” It was filmed in several locations in Portugal, with all members of the team being Portuguese (do Norte and sobretudo do Porto). First long film by the director.

João Bruno

Born in 1996 in Porto, he is a self-taught filmmaker, with training in computer engineering and experience in the military field. Fascinated with cinema, he began to create his “standalone” production for the type of projects he always wanted to make, becoming self-taught in various technical and artistic areas. After several short films over two years, he concluded his first full-length film, “Best Cop Ever,” in 2023.

Meat, a Glued Insustentável - Hugo Almeida- 74’ (Port)- EVENTUALLY SHOCKING DINNERS – PCP- documentary, v.o.

It is not very common for Fantasporto to present documentaries. A quality and impact, I would say also necessity, this film imposes on its projection. In a world where everything is about to change due to climatic changes and their dramatic impact on thousands of human beings, the director Hugo Almeida and his producer, Francisco Guerreiro, this European representative, trace a historical and social overview of the importance of the evolution of the habits of Food and the urgent need to change food, especially in the most advanced societies. This is the director's first long film.

Hugo Almeida

Portuguese director, directed 12 episodes of the series “UBI - a Path to Freedom” about the universal minimum income. In 2022, he will work with the American band Hercules & Love Affair in the documentary “Continuity”. “Carne: A Pegada Insustentável” is his first long film.
