FantasPorto Monday March 3st Lineup - in Review

3 MARCH | DAY 4 Boat ride on the Duro and a visit at Sandeman winery, an occasion to mingle with other filmmakers, and celebrate the beauty of the city.

Main Theatre

14.30 – The Human Race by Paul Hough (EUA) – 90 min -

Veronica suddenly finds herself in an undisclosed location together with a group of 80 people, all of them ripped out of their daily lives. They are in a surreal and horrifying marathon race. The rules are simple. If you are lapped, you die. If you step off the path, you die. Many will start but only one may cross the finish line alive. A very unusual story of science fiction  with episodes of our humanity. Winner at the Long Island Film festival.

Le Dernier Homme de Alex Courtière, 15’ (França), CF Curtas

The film tells us about two men trapped in a cellar. They know they are amongst the last living men on Earth, so they prefer to stay put because they fear women.

16.30 – Soulmate de Axelle Carolyn (GB) – 104 min -

Recently widowed Audrey takes it upon herself to retreat to an isolated Welsh cottage after a failed suicide attempt, to rest, recuperate, and hopefully heal. It’s not long before she begins to hear strange noises in the cottage, suspecting first of all an intruder and then the hallucinogenic side effects of her medication…Eventually this ‘presence’ reveals itself to be the ghost of previous owner who shares the same grief and heartache as Audrey… A sensitive and unexpected story of redemption.

Antecedido por... Dark Side of The Earth de Acim Vasic (França) – 5 min -

Last minutes in a life of an award winning scientist on the run, trying to upload a confession of a shocking discovery, that other scientists from the science center want to hide in order to profit with that information. The Earth will become totally locked with the sun, in synchronous rotation. Temperature and climate will be unbearable on both sides, but the only place for survival will be in-between the affected sides - in the Golden Zone. Other scientists want to keep the co-ordinates secret until they manage to sell it to corporations and the rich.

18.30 - Matei Child Miner de Alexandra Gulea (Roménia) – 80 min -

Matei, a young boy on the verge of adolescence, is fascinated by the past of the Transylvanian mining region he lives in. Upon his return from an initiation journey filled with rich discoveries through the big city, he faces the loss of innocence when confronted with the death of his grandfather. Another example of the blooming Roumenian Cinema Winner of the Critics Award, among others, at the Pesaro Film Festival (Italy) and also part of the selection of the Rotterdam Film Festival.

21.15 - What Maisie Knew de Scott McGehee e David Siegel (EUA) – 99 min -

When Beale and Ida Farange are divorced, the court decrees that their only child, the very young Maisie, will shuttle back and forth between them, spending six months of the year with each. The parents are immoral and frivolous, and they use Maisie to intensify their hatred of each other. Both parents remarry and Maisie stays under the care of a devoted governess, Mrs. Wix, who actually changes everything. Nominated for a Bafta Award for Steve Coogan and part of the selection of the Tokyo Film Festival. Also for the fans of actress Julianne Moore.

23.15 – Big Bad Wolves de Aharon Keshales e Navot Papushado (Israel) - 110 min -

A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder. The question is, is he really guilty? And means can they use to prove it?  Tarantino’s favourite film of 2013, this is also the second feature of the directors of “Rabies”, already presented in Fantasporto 2011 and winner of the Critics Award.

Pass de Lampros Gergopoulos (Grécia) – 7 min - CF Curtas

21.00 – O Bobo de José Álvaro Morais (Portugal) – 120 min - RETROSPECTIVA HENRIQUE ESPÍRITO SANTO– VO port

In a port bar, in the banks of the river Tejo, Rita Portugal and Francisco Bernardes  are waiting for the end of that day. João has been murdered that morning. The body was found in a corner of the studio where they rehearsed the last scene of a play based on “The Jester” by Alexandre Herculano. It hasn´t been easy, only a few actors and technicians almost working for free. The opening was set for the following week.  Later, Francisco was thinking about moving to New York, if only João managed to sell the weapons and make money for the travel. And if Rita accepts to go with him.

Based on the historical novel by Alexandre Herculano, inicially published in the magazine Panorama in 1843 and later as a volume, in a posthumous edition in 1878. It evokes the troubled times of the beginnings of  Portugal, at the time of the Condado Portucalense, and the fighting going on in the symbolic and historical setting of the Guimarães Castle, the stage of much devilish intrigue and romance. The central character is D. Bibas, the court jester, a discreet spectator of passions and plotting and, in fact, the secret protagonist of it all.

A student enters a terrifying world of misery when she answers a job advertisement for a nanny. Held prisoner in a house full of antique toys, she must overcome her deranged captors to become a living doll.
