“Veredas” is the first of the two films by João César Monteiro based on texts about the oral tradition , being “Silvestre” (1982) the second one. These films are free adaptations of that tradition integrating, in the case of “Veredas,” elements coming from the imagination of the director himself, in a typical tendency of the dominant Portuguese documentary cinema from the 60’s which is developed in the 70’s. The mentors of this anthropological devotion are also Manuel Costa e Silva, António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro, Ricardo Costa or Noémia Delgado, all fascinated by the badly known cultural and social archaic realities, so typical of isolated regions with well preserved traditions.
“Veredas” is also the first film in which João César Monteiro himself appears as a character, leading with gusto his own alter ego, a friar leader of robbers. His taste is characterized by a triangle- in the top, a magical point with stories full of fantasy from the Portuguese medieval oral tradition. In the other end, intentionally or not, a narrative in playful disarray and, in the base, the rogue friar, personifying Good and Evil , played by João himself. Appreciating the critiques, the director of “Veredas” repeats himself not only as a cameo but also as a leading character in different versions of his ego in a more realistic context, in films such as “Recordações da Casa Amarela” (1989), “A Comédia de Deus (1995), “Le Bassin de John Wayne” (1997), “As Bodas de Deus” (1999) and, at last, in a sarcastic goodbye in “Vai e Vem” (2003).
